Honey Bee
Question: honey-bee..? You have been stung by honey-bee. What home remedy will you use to relieve the discomfort and why?
Answer: vinegar, and a ruler or knife to scrape out the stinger, plucking it out will inject more poison into me.
You could also try applying a poultice of crushed plantain herb and taking a little internally too.

Question: How can I tell the difference between Africanized honey bee and a normal honey bee? I just notice a bunch of honey bees in the front yard in a bush. How can i tell these are regular honey bee's and not killer bee's?
Answer: Many strains of native honeybees have some African blood in them. You can not distinguish by appearance of worker bees (queens have more differences in morphology) They do tend to be smaller than European honeybees and they are very aggressive: get agitated by smallest of disturbances. They mount a coordinated attack on intruder and by that you usually know that they are Africanized.
Here some characteristics:

Question: What is the difference between a honey bee, and a bumble bee? I've recently noted that there are 2 types of bee's I see mostly.
Little black ones (which I assume are worker bee's collecting honey (ie honey bee's) and the big fat bumble bee's.
What is the difference? Does a bumble bee have a hive? Would they use the same hive as a honey bee?
help?
no, it does not 'Rock chick'
Answer: The bumble bee is from the ‘bombus’ genus and the honey bee is from the ‘apis’ genus.
Both are from the Hymenoptera order which includes wasps and ants.
Both live in hives (nest for a bumble bee), both have queens and both have workers. Both also make honey, but the amount of honey that bumble bees make is negligible, so that’s the main difference. Honey bees make commercially viable amounts of honey and as such are ‘farmed’ for that reason.

Question: How do i get a honey out of a bee hive? there is a natural honey bee hive in my back yard and i was wondering is it possible to get honey out of it. It is not one of thoses hives in a crate but the bees built it on their own.
Answer: You need the proper attire, e.g. gloves with leather sleeves, hat with veil the goes all around and covers the neck too, heavy long sleeve shirt with tee shirt under, long jeans, socks with rubber bands around the cuffs so bees can't get up the legs. When attired, reach in a grab it, don't take it all, it's their food for tough times ahead. Smoke calms them so if you introduce some while working it will make their life and yours a little easier.
Question: How can I keep the honey bee's from robbing my humming bird feeder? Honey bee's are draining my humming bird feeder at a rate of about 1 cup an hour. I don't want to stop feeding the birds, but I don't want to feed the bee's.
Answer: There are several things on the market to stop this, my favorite is a basin style hummingbird feeder. The classic feeder has the nectar above the feeding ports, right? Well, this forces the nectar to the tips of the ports where the bees can reach it. A basin feeder has the nectar below the ports, so the birds dip their beaks in, and the bees can't reach it. Check out this site. You can buy these types of feeders on the net or in a lot of outdoor stores.
Question: How to attract a virgin honey bee queen? I has just finished high school and now waiting for my result, while waiting i taught maybe i can spend a little time breeding honey bee..so what should i do?
Answer: You are going to have to steal yourself a honey bee, as it is illegal to buy queen bees in America. Go out and look for a nest and bag it then just place it where you want the bees and they should eventually find there way to your setup.
Question: What can the agricultural industry do to assist the Honey Bee decline? I have to write a short essay regarding this question, and I just can't find information. And, though the question is worded somewhat strangely (in my point of view, anyway), I think it means "how can the agricultural industry help stop the honey bee decline?"
Any information is helpful. Thank you!
Answer: Planting more crops and allowing more refuge acres that produce nectar/pollen that the bees can utilize. Part of their stress can be due to periodic lack of pollen sources. When it comes to colony collapse disorder the cause is not known. However, cell phone signals, genetically modified seed, etc. are just popular talking points that are not backed up by the scientific research. Most of the issue seems to be not even with pesticides, but rather disease and parasites. Still, decreasing stress for the bees should work in theory, such as reduced pesticide application for the types that can affect honey bees (genetically modified varieties like Bt do not affect honey bees), year round food sources, decreased travel for lowering stress and disease transmission, etc.
Question: What hairstyle and makeup can I do for my honey bee halloween costume? This Halloween I'm going to be a honey bee. The costume is yellow and black striped top with a black tutu. It came with a antenna headband and the costume has some yellow daisies on it. I was wondering what I could do with my hair and make up. Please help!
Answer: two little high buns would be cute for your hair. And you could paint some daisies on your face to match the ones on the costume, and maybe add a little sparkle? What girl doesn't like a little glitter? Best of luck!
Question: Has the killer bee population been effected by the honey bee colony decline? I have noticed a drastic decline of our western honey bees, and I was wondering if the killer bees are effected as are the domesticated western honey bees? Although fortunately, I've never been around killer bees; I've heard a good deal about them, but not lately. Especially, since the honey bee decline has taken place.
Answer: No,not here in North America that anyone is aware of.. Of course, there are no definitive studies because the "Killer bees" swarm so often and are not the most social of the bee populations. The Killer Bee population continues to grow and spread throughout the Southern states. Studies by both Root and Dadant indicate from the movements of the killer bees in South American they will eventually occupy the entire United States except a small portion of Norther Minnesota because of the extreme Temperatures on the Canadian Shield. Some studies show that as the Killer Bees interbreed with the bees that can survive this cold, once a hive has lived through the first winter subsequent members will be able to bridge the temperature barrier.
Studies show that the native Killer Bees in Africa are exhibiting a decline in population just as bad as our European bees are world wide. Their decline is not caused by the same vectors as the European bees. The parasitic bee known as the "Cape Bee" sends workers into the African bee hive and disrupts the Killer Bee colony so severely it collapses. Although the "Small Hive Beetle" a parasite of the "Cape Bee" is now causing considerable damage to the American Bee populations, no studies have been initiated to see if we have Cape Bees in America. The scientists doing the studies on the hive beetle say they must have hitched a ride on boats or something. They certainly don't want to admit they brought them over on cape bees they were studying? So no cape bees have been found. Wink ,wink., just one of their parasites the "Small hive beetle." The killer bee evolved with the Small hive beetle and its hives aren't strongly effected by them.
Question: Does a honey bee suck sugar from unnatural sources, other than from flowers? Can a honey bee suck liquid from unnatural sources to produce honey? For example if a bee finds a pot full of sugar water or jagerry water, will it suck it in order to create honey out of it? Is it possible? Or a honey bee sucks it only from the natural sources like flowers?
Answer: Yes, when the nectar flow is low beekeepers feed their bees sugar water, which the bees dehydrate into honey. I know some beekeepers will take candy that they get as "left overs" from manufacturing operations and make a soup of them and offer it to their bees in 55 gallon drums. Honey bees will also drink from hummingbird feeders when the nectar flow is stopped (it stops every summer during the hottest period and is called a nectar dearth).
Don't worry about the honey that you buy being artificial... most beekeepers collect honey before the dearth and allow the bees to keep the rest for the winter. If any honey has been collected after any additions to the hive (sugar water or medication) the honey can only be used to feed the bees.
Question: What type of flowers does the California Honey Bee Prefer? another part of my project [if you looked at my other bee question] cant find any info about California Honey Bees. if you can, please send links. thank you!
Answer: Bees do nt have a preference for any flower. They are very neutral. Bees get attracted to flowers which are bright and fragnant.
Question: Is it nectar or honey that comes out of the belly of Honey bee? I am doing a report on honey bees.I'm confused if its nectar or honey that comes from the belly of the bee. What ever is your answer, please give links to prove.
Answer: The bee collects nectar from the flowers to make honey.

Question: How do you stop the swelling and itching of a honey bee sting? I got stung twice putting my honey bees in their new box and I need help. It has started itching and swelling and I'm not allergic though. What do I do?
Answer: Mix baking soda and water to make a paste and then put it on the sting. It should soothe it!!!!
Question: How to get rid of Honey Bee's?? Has anybody had trouble of getting rid of Honey Bee's in their yards? Can't find the nest and I have tried everything?
Any ideas out there?
Hello out there- THERE STINGING ME!!!
I'm taking about my front "yard"- not acres or crops. . .
Answer: In your yard? They're not honey bees. Honey bees don't live in the ground. Those are ground wasps. Honeybees build hives in hollow trees, or other out-of-the-way places off the ground.
If you can't find the nest, that's good. You should NEVER try to rid yourself of honeybees, if they really ARE honeybees. The past 6 years have been really hard on the honeybee population--they were nearly wiped out by two viruses, and several large populations did not winter over well. That left the agriculture industry with a horrible dilemma--bees are absolutely necessary to pollinate some crops. If you get rid of bees, you will pay the price in higher prices and scarcities of certain foods (not just honey.) When farmers have to pollinate their crops by hand, (if they even can) then the prices go sky high. Leave the real HONEY bees alone.
Honey bees go where the flowers are--if your yard is full of clover, or any other wildflowers, you will have bees there--that's where they get the nectar to make the honey. Their nectar-gathering places may literally be miles away from their nests.
BUT---I suspect you don't have a good acre or two of clover in your yard---I'm betting you're looking at ground wasps and not honeybees.
Ground wasps don't make honey, and they don't make for friendly yards. They swarm and sting painfully--especially if you disturb the nests. If your yard is full of these, you absolutely must find the hole they use at night. They will all head back there at dusk and fly inside, leaving a couple of "sentry" wasps outside to warn of intruders. It's then you can seal up the hole. You do not EVER want to try to flood them out with water. That not only doesn't work, you could be creating a huge and dangerous swarm. If their nest gets wet, they'll come after you--they are very agressive when you get them wet. Wait untiil dusk, seal the hole up with a large rock or concrete block. It won't kill them and it will take them several days to dig a new exit. Then, when you see them again, their exit will be somewhere else. Seal that hole too, and keep sealing up their holes until you have moved them out of your yard.
Don't use chemicals, fire, gasoline or other toxic items to get rid of bees or wasps of any kind .This is really really BAD for the environment and the ecology. Just move them gradually and they AND you will both be okay.
Question: I'm interested in buying/maintaining a honey bee hive. Can I do that, and is it dangerous to do? I want to have one on my rural residence (around 8 acres of land), for honey production, and for pollination for my garden. I've seen people on TV working a honey bee hive with no protective equipment. What gives? Do these bees not have stingers?
Answer: Its not dangerous unless you allergic and you can do it. I live on about 5 acres and have thought about doing it myself. Yes they can sting but not likely to, there pretty docile. there are plenty of web cites out there:

Question: Honey Bee flying in zero gravity environment? As an experiment in outer space. Have they ever let a honey bee or some other intricately wing animal fly in a zero gravity environment?? Honey bee would be interesting to see.
Answer: I've not heard of anything like this. But it might be difficult to pull off. The bee would probably need a decent size space to fly in in order to determine how well it can fly. I doubt they would let it loose inside the space station or the shuttle, though. Who wants to have a disoriented or demented bee flying around among all that equipment, or while the astronauts are doing research or sleeping?
Question: What kind of bees look like honey bee size black bumble bees? There is a little black bee pollinating our garden and neither my mom nor I know what it's called. It's about the same size as a honey bee, but looks a lot like a black bumble bee. I tried looking up bee on wikipedia, but one thing led to another and I had no clue what it was talking about.
Also, what bee species are native to the US?
Answer: Find the one that looks like your bee and click on the picture. They will provide you a name that you can look up. There are a number of different families of bees. Carpenter are usually larger than honey bees. Bumble bees are about honey bee size but more robust. Identifying the species may require studying the veins in the wings and other details of the bees anatomy. Take your pick.

Question: what are the effects of honey bee strings during pregnancy? I'm 18 weeks pregnant and I was stung by a honey bee friday and again this evening are the baby and I gonna be ok?
Answer: I am sure you and the baby are fine. Unless you are allergic to them you have nothing to worry about. Tell your doctor at your next appointment, but I am sure he/she will tell you that you and the baby are ok as well.
Question: Using a power mower near a honey bee nest? Is there a particular time of day that would be better to use a power mower near a honey bee nest that is in the eaves of the house? Generally the bees do their thing and stick to themselves. I know that sooner or later I will need to get rid of them, but I don't want to kill them.
Answer: You don't have Africanized Bees or it wouldn't make a difference. Your bees are evidently the European variety. You are below their flight pattern. So mowing will not be a problem. The only caveate is to make sure the mower doesn't throw debris up around the entrance. Cut so that the clippings are thrown away from the house and away from the bees. Early morning or late day would further reduce your chances of stirring them up. They quit early and start late. The flowers and the bees follow the same schedule. Some flowers like the Linden or Basswoods get so many bees in them when they are in flower you can hear them before you see them. Some flowers are most nectar filled in the morning. Some, very few comparatively ,are late day nectararians. If you watch their flights you will soon learn when they are most active because of the available forage. Mow when it is slack. Beekeepers like to have woodenfences between them and their neighbors because the incoming bees will stay eave high and never come in contact with those people who live next the the fences on the other side away from the hive.
When you are ready or feel it is necessary to remove the bees contact your county extension office. They will have a list of beekeepers who will remove the bees.
I am the main contact for our area. I built a vacuum operated extractor to help in the removal of bees in cramped areas, like inside houses. The bees are sucked into a holding area prior to entering the vacuum cleaner. None are killed or injured. I have several interchangable boxes so I can examine the bees as they are captured. I want to certain I have the queen. The wind created by the vacuum seems normal so the bees don't even get excited in the process. I take enough honey to make certain the bees can make it through the winter with their cache. I explain to the people how to extract the honey from the combs they are given that are extra. When their friends have bee problems, I get the call. Occassionally there is no extra honey. Sometimes I have to make up feed to get them through the winter.
You should have no trouble with your bees if you follow the simple rules of keeping out of their flight pattern and don't throw anything against the guard bees at the holes entrance. They don't want to waste time stinging you. They've got a hive to maintain.
Question: What other insect(s) can make honey apart from the honey bee and bumblebee? we used to dig up for honey from the anthill and also harvest honey from tree branches which had holes when i was young. the insects that make this honey are very different from the common honey bee and bumblebee we know. What are the names of these insects and may you refer me where i can get details
Answer: I think the honeypot ant does.
Question: What pesticide is killing the honey bee? What pesticide is killing the honey bee?
Answer: That would be area dependent. The European honey bee is found world wide and in different countries and will be affected by different pesticides in different countries.

Question: Can I have a honey bee hive and the bees removed from underneath my storage shed for less than $300? I live in Orange County, California and I would like to have the bees removed but not killed. I also need to have the honey comb removed so that they do not come back. Is there a city service (Anaheim) or animal control service that could help me? The lowest quote I've been able to obtain, without killing the bees (which costs more) is $300.
Answer: There seems to be a big shortage of honeybees. Try contacting a beekeeper, they might pay you to have them removed.
Question: How to start Honey Bee Farming? I am fond of honey and like to know how to start bee farming, what stuff do i need what's the correct procedure to make honey?
Answer: Bees are fickle and can be easily destroyed and mishandled.
This defeats the purpose (whatever that is)I expect.
So as when caring for anything you need education FIRST!!
The very best source in the whole universe is:
ABC and XYZ of BEE CULTURE.
A.I. ROOT company
MEDINA, OHIO
You should be able to find a copy on e-bay no problem.
This is a perenniel source of info for over 120 years in over 30 editions.
It covers everything there is that we know of about bee culture to the date of the latest edition.
You only need one edition.
The latest would be the best and most informative.
It will also be the most expensive.
An edition from the 80's would suffice.
Good luck hope this helps.

Answer: Hi Sarah
You're not on your own!! I've been to Goa and Kerala many times and have always stocked up for the return trip home because you simply can't get Honey Bee Brandy in the UK. I'm very good friends with an India wholesaler and even can't get it (he can get everything else)!
So there you have it. I'm going back to India in 8 weeks - place your orders now!
D
Question: Can people post some facts a figures about honey bee population decline please? I have to do a project on honey bees and their population decline so any information or links people have would be greatly apriciated
Sorry forgot to add...only honey bees in the UK ^_^
Thanks
Answer: The honeybee decline, which is affecting domesticated and wild bee populations around the world, is mostly the result of diseases spread as a result of mites and other parasites as well as the spraying of crops with pesticides, scientists say.
Among the greatest problems is the varroa mite, a bloodsucking parasite that attacks young and adult honeybees. Attacked bees often have deformed wings and abdomens and a shortened life span.
"The varroa mite is also really effective at transmitting disease, particularly viruses,". Left untreated, a varroa mite infestation can wipe out a bee colony within a few months.

Question: is it dangerous to live by a honey bee farm? We are thinking of buying a lot near a honey bee farm and wondered if we would have problems with them swarming on our property. I've been out to the lot many times but never see bees (because there's nothing to attract them at this point. Once in the home we would have flowers and trees that would attract bees. We are trying to choose between two lots. Thanks
Answer: we have farmers all around us that keep bees for honey production
never have we noticed an irregular amounts of bees
bees don't swarm for an unnecessary reason - only when making a new hive, and that is wild ones - domesticated ones that are kept the farmer controls how many new queens hatch and the swarming doesn't happen - he makes a box for the new queen and the hive divides when he lets them
