Black Currant Leaf
Question: HELP on grammar please!!? I need to quote this from great expectations and make it flow with my words
for this sentence: His involvement in Satis House caused “both [his] hands to be **burnt**”
do I need to change "burnt" to "[burned]" ?
like, which is grammatical:
"hands to be burnt" vs. "hands to be burned"
** example of a grammatically correct sentence w/ quote so you know what i mean:
Biddy crushes a black currant leaf in her hand and “rub[s] it to pieces”(Dickens 116) as if
to symbolize her disappointment in Pip’s dissatisfaction.
Answer: No change, since 'burnt' is a grammatically correct past participle of 'burn.' It's used much more in the UK than the US, but even here we call the color 'burnt orange,' not 'burned orange.'
And occasionally you will hear native American speakers use 'burnt' in other usages.
Question: my gooseberry bush has been stripped? my gooseberry bush has had all the leave's stripped from it down to the leaf stem, does anyone know what maybe the culprit and how i can stop it happening again?. Is that it for this year will i not get any fruit from it and will it recover and survive. I also have some red and black currants and ive started seeing holes appear in the leaves could it be the same culprit?
Answer: Isn't there a netting that you cover the bush's with? if not make your own, might be cheaper then buying a lot of chemicals and spraying then respraying after the rain.
Question: What kind of berry is this? I don't have the exact picture of it, but I'll describe it as best as I can.
The round berries look like black currants : http://www.alfitness.com.au/files/blog_i… but unlike black currants, these berries have one single seed in it...and the seed is like that of a cherry.
And it grows from a shrub, with yellow-green leaves that sort of look like this:

I've seen these around a lot, actually. I think some people use these as fence shrubs around their homes. What's the name of this plant?
Answer: Might be you are looking for a yellowish type of cherry laurel, Prunus laurocerasus. They have stone fruits = drupes like cherries.
3 examples:
Carolina Cherry Laurel:

Prunus laurocerasus 'Mt. Vernon':

This site does not show fruits but they look very similar to those of Carolina Cherry Laurel
A variegated type as on your photo is Prunus laurocerasus 'Castlewellan' ( without fruit pic too )

Question: Does this recipe sound good? I'm experimenting in Greek cooking. The latest dish Ive come up with, I like it, but then again thats just me...it's
black olives and currants stewed together. Then I add mushrooms, calimari, buckwheat, and fennel seeds. Stuff it all into a peeled baby eggplant, dip it into an eggbath, wrap the whole thing in spinach leaves and bake it just long enough to get out the excess moisture.
Ive tried it, and to me its good, but I dono about anyone else. Oh yeah and I guess I didnt mention Im making recipes because Im opening a restaurant, lol...so if you saw this on a restaurant menu, would you order it?
Answer: It sounds yummy except for the calimari (I don't care for it). If you leave that out you'd have a very nice purely vegetarian starter. I love the idea of the olives and currants together. And when you say buckwheat, do you mean like kasha or cracked wheat like tabbouleh? I think cracked wheat would be better, but the buckwheat should be good too. I'd definitely order it, and good luck with your restaurant!
Question: Would you like this as a light vegetarian lunch for Boxing Day? Starter: Bite-sized deep fried brie with a red currant, cranberry and port sauce, served with salad leaves
Main: A medley of wild mushrooms in a creamy sauce, with a hint of garlic and herbs, served with a warm salad of roasted Mediterranean vegetables
Black grapes, strawberries, melon balls, chunks of pineapple, banana and big red cherries on a skewer to dip in three types of chocolate sauce, extra dark, milk and white with raspberry liqueur.
They are vegetarian, not vegan, have no allergies, and I ask because I'm not a veggie!!
I forgot to say angel hair pasta with the musrooms!!
Answer: Hell yes, I would!
That is a LOVELY sounding selection, and you have out soooo much thought into it. It will taste even better, because your guests will know you don't share their diet, yet have put so much effort into creating them a beautiful spread. You must be a wonderful Friend - AND a great hostess!
