Yucca Schidigera
Question: What is your opinion on Dog Food ingredient splitting? “ingredient splitting" is where the manufacturers split up the grain fractions or the by-product fractions so that they can be listed lower on the ingredient list, but when all of the grain or by-product sources are added together, they total more than the muscle meat that is listed first.
For example:
Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Taurine, Flaxseed, Vitamins/Minerals.
Here Chicken is listed first, but there are two types of rice – hence more grains than meat?
Another Example:
Potatoes, Duck, Duck Meal, Canola Oil, Potato Fiber, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Rosemary Extract, Natural Flavor, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamins
It has duck and duck meal – hence more protein even though potatoes is the first ingredient?
Is ingredient splitting real or is it a myth since pet food makers are required to carefully label their products according to stringent government regulations?
Both of the examples are allergy food with single source protein, grain formula. First is California Natural Chicken and Rice, the second is Natural Balance Duck and Potato.
Is there any single source protien/carb food that has more actual protein content - as needed for efficient consumption/digestion for dogs?
Answer: "It has duck and duck meal – hence more protein even though potatoes is the first ingredient?"
Not neccessarily, there only has to be more duck meal than canola oil for it to be listed third, and only more duck than duck meal for that to be listed second. This food could very well be much more potato than duck, although I don't know this particular food. Is it an allergy formula?
As far as listing several grain types, that is a pretty sneaky way to use more grains in a food, many customers don't understand how it works.
"Is there any single source protien/carb food that has more actual protein content - as needed for efficient consumption/digestion for dogs?"
I feed sensible choice. It is a single source protein, but brewers and brown rice. My dogs do well on it but I am not entirely happy with the ingredients (meal). 25 protein/15 fat
I would much rather feed Natural Balance (not allergy formula) as I think it is one of the best foods out there, but not a single protein source (chicken, duck, lamb I believe). It is just a bit lower protein/fat than I would like to feed my working dogs. I have been thinking of switching back to it and adding stewed chicken to their feed. 22% protein, not sure about fat.
It is SO HARD to find a food I feel really good about feeding.
Question: Do Healthy Baker Lawn Protection Biscuits work? I have two dogs that have destroyed my new lawn. There are burns all over it. I ran across the Healthy Baker Lawn Protection Biscuits and they claim that their biscuits neutralize the pH of pets' urine to prevent lawn burn damage. But I wonder two things:
Do they work?
Are they safe?
I looked up the ingredients and they are:
Whole Wheat Flour, Peanut Meal, Ground Corn, Dried Beet Pulp, dl-Methionine (5%), Chicken Fat preserved with mixed tocopherols (a source of vitamin E), Salt, and Yucca Schidigera.
Answer: i think they do work otherwise you could call the company and ask for a refund. and as for being safe, unless you dog could choke on the treat or is allergic to peanuts or wheat, i think you're fine
Question: Is there a simpler name for these two ingredients? Yucca schidigera and Guanidine Carbonate... Are they like for example another name for salt? I know it's not salt, but that was an example. Anyone know?
Answer: Yucca schidigera is a kind of cactus. Guanidine carbonate is, in fact, a salt, but probably does not have a common name, as it is a rather unusual one. It is also called Bisguanidinium carbonate, Diguanidinium carbonate or Guanidinium carbonate.
Question: How would you rate this dog food? Given the ingredients listed below, how would you rate this dog food?
Beef & Beef by-products, chicken & chicken by-products, rice, rice bran, animal fat, chicken digest, salt, vitamins A,, D3, E, K, B1, B2, B6, B12, biotin, folic acid, calcium, pantothenate, niacin, choline, essential minerals incl calcium, phosphorous, trace elements cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, zinc, selenium, yucca schidigera extract, anti oxidants.
Answer: To 'the vet' above, wheat should NEVER be the first ingredient in dog food. It should always be meat.
Not every one can afford the very best of foods, so I have a check list I recommend following when selecting food, and then chose the best that you can afford.
1. Meat is the FIRST ingredient
2. No corn
3. Rice rather than wheat (rice is gentler on the digestive system and can reduce the incidence of diarrhoea)
3. AFFCO approved. Even though the cheapest of foods often bear this approval, at least if you are unsure, you know that your dog will be getting its minimum dietry requirements.
When it comes to food, everyone has a differnt reason why you should or shouldn't use something. The ingredients you have listed tick all the boxes in my check list (I'm not sure about the AFFCO, you'd have to check that) so it is reasonable. The higher the % of protein, the less you need to feed, so (generally) the better the quality of food.
Question: What do you think of "solid gold" pet food? these are the ingredients...are they good?
Salmon Meal | Beef | Potatoes | Potato Protein | Canola Oil | Tomato Pomace | Natural Flavor | Salmon Oil | Choline Chloride | Taurine | Dried Chicory Root | Parsley Flakes | Pumpkin Meal | Almond Oil | Sesame Oil | Yucca Schidigera Extract | Thyme | Blueberries | Cranberries | Carrots | Broccoli | Vitamin E Supplement | Iron Proteinate | Zinc Proteinate | Copper Proteinate | Ferrous Sulfate | Zinc Sulfate | Copper Sulfate | Potassium Iodide | Thiamine Mononitrate | Manganese Proteinate | Manganous Oxide | Ascorbic Acid | Vitamin A Supplement | Biotin | Calcium Panthothenate | Manganese Sulfate | Sodium Selenite | Pyridoxine Hydrochloride | Vitamin B12 Supplement | Riboflavin | Vitamin D Supplement | Folic Acid |
Answer: It sounds standard, although the amount of preservatives looks scary.
Question: Should women with dry facial skin use toner? It's a rose / glycerin facial toner from Burt's Bees...
Ingredients: rosa damascena (rose) flower water, alcohol denat., glycerin, centaurea cyanus (cornflower) flower extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) leaf extract, yucca schidigera leaf extract
Answer: Yes the toner just removes more dirt and dead skin cells... toner is always a plus. But, if you have dry skin, try something just a little better for your specific skin type like Clinique clarifying lotion (it's basically a toner) #1 or #2. This will help in further exfoliation and be non-drying as well as helping to balance the skin.
Good luck!

This is Natural Life Puppy Dry Food
Answer: Sounds like a decent food to me - doesn't contain corn, wheat, or soy - all of which I try to stay away from.
Meal is completely different from by-products. Lamb meal is actually a better source of protein than just lamb. In a meal, in this case, Lamb Meal, it means the water has been removed from the lamb meat prior to it being used. This is a good thing because it means more actual meat protein is going into the food per volume and less water. Meal *Does NOT* contain hoofs, beaks, feathers, etc. that one would find in By-Products. It's a point that is commonly confused by people.

Answer: It is extremely high in protein, so I would not feed it to an adult giant breed dog. (Great dane, Mastiff, etc.) Although I am guessing it is a puppy food or small breed food.
Also, it has not corn or soy products in it. Which are really bad. You do have Chicken meal and Salmon meal, as well as dried whole egg. All of which are very good for dogs.
So, my answer would be: "Yes, I would feed this to my dogs."
Question: Are these all healthy ingredients for a dogs coat? (Pet Cologne)? I went to a professional dog store today and they had a wide array of pet colognes available and I bought one that you can spray and it helps with detangling (and it works well!). I was wondering if all of these ingredients are healthy?: kava extract, peach extract, yucca, schidigera extract, kiwi seed, yarrow extract, chamomilla extract, white ginger extract, calendula extract, raspberry extract, aloe extract. It smells so good~
Answer: If it was made specifically for dogs then I can't imagine that it's bad for them. Since you bought it at a pet store it was probably expensive. I got Perfect Scents from Walmart. It works great. It's not a de-tangler though.
Love your user name.

Whomever said it sounds like Solid Gold Indigo Moon is correct!
http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/products/…
That is the link to their webpage that lists the food.
Answer: Looks almost like Solid Gold indigo moon! :)
The chicken meal and high protein make this an awesome food, I'd feed it.
EDIT: Three thumbs down, seriously? This is a pretty good food, as far as dry foods go. Sure, potatoes probably shouldn't be the second ingredient, but this is a grain-free, high-protein cat food and it is certainly much better than the Friskies and Meow Mix that about half of the pet-owning households in the US think is good food. I find the Solid Gold brand to be pretty trustworthy and would take this over the freaking Science Diet that my new vet keeps trying to push on me.

They don't have very many brands at the pet store. All they have is ProNature, Nutrience, Science Diet, I live in a small place and can't get nowhere else to shop and I want to get the best for my little dog. She is pomeraian/japenise chin. Thanks.

Answer: I'd say it's mid-grade. The things I don't like are:
Brewer's rice - especially being the second ingredient. Brewere's rice is not a whole grain rice but rather the bits and pieces and may not have all the nutritional quality of whole grain.
Beet pulp - Is a filler
natural flavor - doesn't say of what. Could be natural flavor of crap for all we know
salt - dog food doesn't need extra salt. What are they covering up the taste of?
Other than that it looks good. There isn't anything awful, but just a few mildly concerning ingredients. All in all I'd say you could do MUCH worse than this food.

this is really dumb. when i added a detail, it just became my main question and the main thing became the detail.
the vet said that he like barely hears it.
it's not even every time that my dog's heart beats.
She's 6 months old.
just got her spayed TODAY
(like i found about the murmur today when i went to spay her..)
and I was wondering what kind of food is good for these situations?
I know it's nothing serious since you can barely hear the murmur and there is a chance she might outgrow it (remember, she's 6 months old)
but i heard there are good foods for these kind of situations.
it would be awesome if you would let me know
because she's my first dog and i am absolutely in love with her and i feel like a mother to her.
I don't want anything bad to happen to her..
i feed her vet's choice health extension

you can check the ingrediants if you'd like, they are very good i think.
Thank you for your help.
I really appreciate it.
that's like the ingredients if you didn't want to go to another site.
i think it got cut off......
but still, that's like almost everything.
my computer is demented. it's like not getting all the orders of my question right!!!
Answer: the diet is important...you dont want a lot of fat on the dog but it is still a pup and needs to be fed like one. the most important thing you can do is excercise the dog properly. remember the heart is a muscle and like our hearts get stronger with excercise! to much excercise on an unhealthy heart cause it stress.

Answer: I used Solid Gold products for years with very good results, until I got my latest pup. I couldn't keep his stool solid, so I did further research and ended up switching to Taste of the Wild products. As I said, my dogs did VERY well on the Solid Gold, but they seem to be doing better on the Taste of the Wild. It's grain free and you can find information on it at:
http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/
I work for a woman who breeds champion Portuguese Water Dogs and talked to her about the switch. She has always used Solid Gold products, but after a lot of research has also made the change. There have been less days of stomach upset, runny stool, the coats are easier to comb out, and they seem to be a little more frisky. I have American Bulldogs, a rottie/shephard mix, and an old hound (who was a very picky eater). All of them seem to be doing better on the Taste of the Wild, even though they did well on the Solid Gold.

I forgot to mention WHY you pick the food? Even though solid golds protein is at 42% and welness only 34??
Answer: I'd go with the Wellness Core because although the protein percentage is lower, it seems as though the wellness core has more meat source protein as opposed to plant source protein (ie the potato protein in the Solid Gold). Both foods have a named meat product as the 1st ingredient and although the Wellness Core is inclusive of water content for the 1st two ingredients which would actually put them lower on the ingredient list, the 3rd and 4th ingredients are meat meals so without water. Both foods are quality though and I don't think its possible to go wrong.

My dog is a miniature schnoodle that weighs about 10 lbs.
Answer: Aha! You bought the sparkly pink bag! = ) I love Solid Gold. It's an awesome brand. Adult dogs need around 26% protein in their diet and 6% percent fat among other things. Puppies need a bit more, seniors a bit less. And the ingredients, which are listed by weight, are mostly meat and other things that are good for them. So you've done a great job in selecting a "small bite" food for your small doggy. = ) But it doesn't mean that your dog will take well to this food immediately. It may take some testing, but for the most part, unless your doggy has any food allergies you are unaware of, he'll do fine with this brand. To avoid things like tummy upset or diarrhea, change his/her food slowly. It should take you a month to switch completely. For the first two weeks mix in 25% of the new food with 75% old food, the week after, 50/50 and the last week 25% old food, 75% new food. And provide plenty of water.
Other foods I love for my dogs are Nutro, Natural Balance and Castor and Pollux, just in case Solid Gold doesn't work out.
Good luck, you seem like a caring and responsible pet parent. = )
