Whole Oats
Question: Help! I bought whole oats by mistake. How or where do I get them hulled? I meant to buy rolled oats by the bulk, but mistakenly purchased whole oats. I have no idea how to hull them or where to go to have them hulled. Any ideas??
Answer: Sears sells a rolling mill for home hulling, but if this is a one time mistake, you probably don't want to "shell out" (sorry, couldn't resist) for a special machine. According to this book, The Encyclopedia of Country Living http://books.google.com/books?id=8vqp_XLfNKYC&pg=PA179&lpg=PA179&dq=how+to+hull+oats+at+home&source=web&ots=OY8bZgTy6P&sig=GnE6l_kChkCWUzxd6g9tk0tFqx8&hl=en , you could just put them in a blender, and chop them up, and then sift to separate the hulls; it's inefficient, but better, I guess, than throwing the food away. You might improve upon this method by using a hand held mixer in a quart Mason jar - the mixer beater would tend to cut less than blender blades while still providing a lot of mechanical agitation, and although the process wouldn't be super efficient, it might be an order of magnitude less dusty than the blender method. Another thing I've seen done is a couple of wooden mallets used to pound the heck out of a Ziplock bag of whole oats for 5 minutes, followed by screen sifting the result.
Question: ways to sneak whole oats into foods? i need to incorporate whole oats into my diet,
got any ideas? I'm a bit tired of oatmeal for breakfast everyday!!
into meatloaf--like instead of the breadcrumbs?
that's a great idea!
do you know if you can use the whole oats doing that? do they need to be soaked or anything? (i heard they have to be soaked for some things, but i may be wrong)
Answer: I know you can put oats into meatballs or meatloaf as a binder.
Frtom the Quaker Oatmeal site--I think I need to try this now too!
Ingredients
1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef or turkey
3/4 cup Quaker® Oats(quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup catsup
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Preparation Steps
Heat oven to 350°F. Combine all ingredients in large bowl; mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape meatloaf mixture into 10x6-inch loaf on rack of broiler pan.
Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until meatloaf is to medium doneness (160°F for beef, 170°F for turkey), until not pink in center and juices show no pink color. Let stand 5 minutes before slicing. Cover and refrigerate leftovers promptly and use within 2 days, or wrap airtight and freeze up to 3 months.
Question: Is quaker large flakes whole grain oats a really healthy breakfast? I was trying to get the healthiest oatmeal I could find at the grocery store today, so I got what I thought looked healthy. Quaker Large Flakes 100% whole grain oats. I want to live for a long time.
Answer: uhh yeah, you just said it was whole-grain, whole grain is super healthy for you! :))
Question: Are all Rolled Oats , also Whole grain oats? I was reading the label on my oatmeal. I have one container of store brand oatmeal, and one container of Quaker oatmeal. The quaker container says Whole Grain Oats on the the conatiner, and the ingredients also say Whole grain rolled oats. The store brand just says Old Fashioned Oats, and the ingredients says rolled oats. It does not say Whole grain rolled oats. So I am wondering if it all rolled oats are also whole grains, or if I should only be buying quaker oatmeal.
Answer: they're the same thing. the store brand is probably just as good.
Question: Is it safe to give hamsters whole oats? I have a bucket of Quakers whole oats, and theyre whole grain. They are just plan they dont have any fruit or sugar in them. Is it safe to give to them? And what other foods are safe to give for them? Thanks!
And have you ever had a hamster? Tell me your experiences with them! (:
Answer: Hi there--
Although i have never heard of giving hamsters oats i don't recommend it and i don't think it is necessary for the hamsters diet should contain everything it needs.But as a treat my hamster loves Yogurt drops, Carrots (small and chopped) apples (small and chopped) Cucumber (small and chopped)
Good luck
Question: can I use whole oats instead of quick oats in cookies? I ran out and I need 1 1/4 c more but all I have are regualr oats?
Answer: I usuallt don't pay attention to the type of oats recipes call for. Unless you are actually making oatmeal, it does not seem to make a difference. I bake oatmeal cookies often. You may have to cook them for a minute more, but that's it.
Question: Are rolled oats a whole grain? I have been researching how to add whole grains to my diet and am puzzled as to whether rolled oats are a whole grain. Could someone please fill me in?
Answer: Yes they are. Scads of different grains are grown around the world. Here are some of the more common whole grains or whole-grain foods you're likely to find in a grocery or health-food store:
* Amaranth
* Barley
* Brown rice
* Bulgur (cracked wheat)
* Whole-wheat pasta or couscous
* Flaxseed
* Millet
* Oats
* Quinoa
* Rye
* Spelt
* Wheat berries
* Wild rice
Question: Why does the Quaker Oats package say to microwave whole grain oats? I've been eating them for years with just hot water.
Answer: Assuming you are referring to instant oatmeal- regular instant oatmeal is made with oats that are very processed, the pieces of oat are small and flat and fully cook with just boiling water. Whole grain oats are the whole grain with no processing. This form of oatmeal is much higher in fiber and is more healthy for you but because the grain kernel is not cut or squished in any way it will take longer to cook because the water has to penetrate the kernel's "shell" (outer skin, the brown part). You could also cook your instant whole grain oatmeal on the stove but that would take longer than the microwave and then the manufacturerer could not call it instant! So, they tell you to microwave instead and in a minute or so your whole grain kernels are cooked just like the regular processed instant oatmeal! Enjoy!
Question: Are Quaker Oats whole grain bad for dogs? My Beagle loves them but are they bad for her?
Answer: Plain oatmeal is good for dogs. I use Quaker Oats are part of the recipe for my beagle's Kong stuffing.
Question: Are whole gain rolled oats the same as whole wheat? Are whole gain rolled oats the same as whole wheat?
Answer: Rolled oats are basically oat groats that have been rolled out and lightly toasted so they cook faster. You can compare them to Quaker quick oats if you like.
Whole Wheat is made from wheat germ. Meaning the entire grain was used, and nothing was lost in the process.
Being that they are coming from different types of grain, I would say that they are not the same.
Question: Help me! Where can I find whole rolled oats? Where can I find them? I've tried a couple grocery stores now, even Wal-Mart, and no luck. I don't want the instant stuff. Does Quaker make whole rolled oats?
I hadn't thought to check the organic aisle, perhaps that's my problem! I checked the hot cereal sections, but maybe that's why I cannot find them. Thanks everyone for your answers, wish I could give points to more than 1 of you!
Answer: Every grocery store I've been in, in the US, sells whole rolled oats, including the Quaker brand oats. It's just the regular oats. Stay away from the instant oatmeal. Even better if you can find it in your store are steel-cut oats. Look by the organic section.
Question: Is it okay to eat raw 100% whole grain quick oats? They taste amazing!
I tried it cooked and it doesn't have as much flavor as it does raw. I also enjoy the little bit of crunch.
Answer: Absolutely. Some raw whole grains are too rough for people's stomachs, and simmering in water or milk softens the grains. Whole grain quick oats are parboiled (partially cooked) anyway.
Enjoy!
Question: I have a wheat allergy, is it safe for me to eat whole-grain oats? Wheat is the only thing I'm allergic to, but I was reading the ingredients on the box and that was in it. Is it safe for me to eat? Should I worry about cross contamination?
The box was for honey nut cheerios, by the way.
Answer: Oats are NOT wheat - however if the box says there is wheat in Cheerios then maybe you'd better avoid them. Ask yourDoctor to be sure that oats aren't on your list of non edibles.
But again my point is that they are two completely different species of plant.
Question: whole oats & milk production... ways to sneak whole oats into foods? what are some ways to sneak some more whole oats into foods?
does it have to be eaten as a bowl of oatmeal in order to help milk supply?
any info or ideas for me??
i'm getting tired of oatmeal everyday (even dressed up with raisins, walnuts, milk & brown sugar)...
Answer: Muffins? Granola bars? Oatmeal cookies? Meatloaf/meatballs?
Actually you can buy whole oat flour or make it by grinding oats in a blender (depending on the blender) and use it in your baking. If you buy commercial flour you can substitute it for all the flour, if you make your own you might want to use some flour if its not fine enough. When using oat flour instead of wheat baked good turn out moister and slightly sweeter, most people find it works just fine. Occasionally you may need to slightly reduce the liquid in the recipe.
Question: Oats and Whole Wheat: nutritional comparison? Oats or whole wheat: which is healthier?
Since I like my morning bowl of oatmeal, but I also like making whole wheat bread, I've been wondering which is healthier.
A simple solution may be to just eat both - oatmeal early in the day, bread for evening snacks.
My current diet is very healthy, I eat a wide variety of vegetables and some fruits every day. This question is really not a big deal, but I just thought I'd see if anyone knew.
Any information is appreciated!
Answer: Oats are a bit healthier. This site below gives you nutritional analysis and is so helpful. You can find recipes like breads in the link at the bottom with more nutrients in them. Dave's bread is so tasty and packed with nutrition. It is really moist too. =)

Question: What kind of oats are not whole grain?
Answer: http://www.formerfatguy.com/articles/oatmeal/oats.asp
All you need to know about oats! Go nuts!
Question: Whole Foods bought wild oats. Can I buy wild Oats @ TODAYS Market price which is lower tthan whole Foods and? will it sell at price of whole foods?
Answer: This info may be late, and it is probably best asked in a finance section, but it will depend on the terms of the buyout (price and details of what Whole Foods is going to pay). For example, you might only get 1/2 a share of Whole Foods for each 1 share of Wild Oats. Or if Wild Oats is at $18, Whole Foods might offer $20 for each share.
The last article I read said it wouldn't happen until April.
Question: What is a healthy way to prepare/cook/bake whole oats for my dog? My dog is eating a high protein, raw diet now. Only thing is, I am convinced he needs some grains, although some of you will disagree. What convinced me is the change in his coat after I put him on grain-free food. I don't feel comfortable feeding him other kinds of grains, but whole organic oats seem to be very good for him. So how would I cook them or prepare them? Would I mix it in with his raw food? (the meat and bones)? Or would I just feed it to him plain at a different time of the day?
Any ideas? :)
Please answer the question, rather than posting answers about how dogs don't need grains, because mine does better with good grains.
@Sighthounds, or anyone else who can elaborate on the answer... did you/he mean mix raw eggs, pureed veggies, yogurt in with the oats or the raw meat? :) I think he meant in the oats. Also, for some reason rice,even brown, has caused my dog to have urinary stones, which his breed is prone to, so I need to stay away from that. But I didn't know that rolled oats are better! Thank you!!
@$arah thanks! I will look up the link.
@Leah thanks!!
Answer: I agree that a lot of dogs actually benefit from some grains in their diet and I add some grains to my dogs diet.
To cook oats, I boil them in water. Make sure the water is at a full boil, then add the oats, cover, turn the heat off, and do not stir until they are finished, about 15 minutes. I'm not sure of the ratio of oats to water but I'm sure the package will tell you. I believe this is the best way to prepare oats for dogs. Also, I don't think that whole oats are easily digested by dogs, rolled oats are probably a better choice, brown rice also works. But dogs cannot digest grains unless they are completely cooked, so overcooking is beter than undercooking.
I would not mix it with the raw meat. But I may mix in some raw eggs, and possibly some pureed veggies or even some dairy, like yogurt, raw milk, cottage cheese, or sour cream.
Question: The food I feed my dog has whole oats in it. Is this a good thing?
It's a very healthy premium human grade dog food and meat is the first ingredient. Whole oats is the only grain in it.
Answer: As long as there is more meat than grain in the food and the ingredients are quality, it is in all likelyhood a good food.
Whole oats is just like brown rice, millet, barley. It is just another grain.
Question: I have Ready Brek Porridge Oats for breakfast, would there be a lot of calories in one bowl with whole milk? I need something that sustains me at least until lunch time.
I am trying to control my diet as I have started an exercise regime and aim to lose about 1 stone (14 pounds) in the next year (or maybe less).
Do Porridge Oats contain a lot of carbs? I know that it releases energy slowly, is that a good thing or a bad thing for someone who is dieting?
Advice please!
Answer: I'm on a diet and lost 7 lbs in 3 weeks and i always have porridge for breakfast!
I get the flavoured Quaker Oats one - golden syrup flavour so it has some sweetness.
I use skimmed milk and the calories are only 216ish.
Porridge is great - but the whole milk isn't a good idea.
Use half whole milk and half water.
