Question: what plant grows fastest: sambucus nigra (elder) or virburnum opulus (snowball tree)? I'm looking for something to plant (these plants can be planted from November onwards) and grow REALLY QUICKLY for height and coverage?
Answer: I planted elder and geulder rose (viburnum opulus) last november. The bare root saplings were the same size, about a foot high when planted. The elders are now all between 4 and 7 feet tall and quite shrubby and bushy, the geulder rose are between 2 and 3 feet tall, and have branches but not nearly so well developed as the elders. They were all treated the same way, I used 'rootgrow' mycorhizal fungi to speed their establishment.
I got mine from 'hedges direct' who were very helpful with advice and support.

Answer: Elderberry cannot cure swine flu. Flu is caused by a virus and there is nothing that can eliminate a virus other than "washing your hands, keeping clean, staying away from those who have the virus"
There is a difference of opinion in the medical community regarding the validity of elderberries and health value.
