Why should commerating last century's war dead be so important when the UK is part of the "coalition of the willing" against Iraq, contributing towards the deaths of more than 1million?
Answer: Why not the poppy is for the fallen over all the battles and wars, and your opinion about the war in Iraq is prob felt by many soldiers there whom have been in the service before the war,iam not adding comments about if the war is wrong or right but soldiers and any profession in the military are sent to places and have no choice to where they are sent we wear the poppy for them and not for the Wars.

Here is a link to a site that can tell you some recorded selling prices for individual pieces. Be aware that there are regional differences in terms of what the market will bear. This should at least give you a little help in reaching a fair price with your mother though.

Nope, they are lining someone pocket!
Question: Does anyone know the history of wearing the Red Poppy in November?
Answer: The poppy is traditionally worn by people in Canada and the United Kingdom (and possibly Australia and NZ).
It was inspired by a poem called "In Flanders Fields" written by a Canadian soldier named John McCrae, after seeing his friend killed in battle:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Question: I have ordered a 'poppy red' coloured couch. Any ideas what colours I should use for contrasting cushions?
Answer: For a modern, contemporary look that's also sophisticated & elegant, choose a charcoal gray. For traditional, select a mid-tone green. And for transitional, pick a medium beige. (the shade you choose should be the same saturation of color as the sofa) Then use that color on the walls as well, & get an area rug incorporating those colors. Repeat in accessories. For contemporary or transitional use silver tones to accent, & for traditional, use bronze.

Question: are the red poppy's in a pack of poppy seeds (bought from a supermarket) the opium producing plant?
Answer: Opium poppies usually have deep red flowers but they can be pink, too. You won't find seed of this species at the supermarket, unless you mean the seed that you cook with (for example, to make poppy seed rolls) ... these are opium poppy seeds but they are irradiated to make sure they won't germinate (-- there is no opium in the seeds).
Many other species of poppy have red flowers. One good example is Papaver rhoeas, which has fairly large red flowers (see link). This is one species you'll probably find in the garden seed section but there are others with red flowers.
Question: Rememberance day- Red Poppy, White Poppy, or no Poppy? With rememberance day just coming up will you be buying a poppy? If so will you go for the traditional red or the peace protest white? If not at all then why not?
Answer: I will be buying a red poppy, I think it is very important and it's a time to remember all the people who have died during the war. Peace is an important cause but protests should be left for another time, not now.
Edit: Sorry Alberto, I accidentally gave you a thumbs down, meant to give you a thumbs up, v sorry!

Question: Why do the British wear a red poppy with a black base?
Answer: They wear them for remembrance day to remember all the soldiers that have died during wars. The poppy was the only flower that would grow in the trenches and in the battle zones between British and enemy lines during WW1 and WW2. Many soldiers would attach them to letters sent home to loved ones. That's why they adopted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance !
