Passionflower
Question: How do you use Passionflower Leaves to make tea? I have a Passionflower Vine (passiflora incarnata) and I need to know how you use the leaves to make tea. Do I need to dry them? If so, how?
Answer: you can do either or. Use them fresh or dried. I would use them fresh since they won't break apart. Boil the leaves in water for about 10 minutes. Let cool and serve over ice or drink hot. This is what you do with mint leaves also.
Question: Can I drink teas with passionflower herb during third trimester to help induce labor? I am 38weeks pregnant and my doc wants me to have a c- section on Feb 19 2009. My baby is big. She is really starting to hurt when she moves. I am having really strong contractions but not dilating yet. Can I drink teas with passion flower herb and catnip to help stimulate the uterus and go into labor before the 19 of Feb. Need help here, I have the tea and want to drink some but afraid it might hurt baby, will it?
Answer: you said it yourself.. you are 38 weeks.. you have 2 weeks to go... get your mind off of it and get the house cleaned and some meals in your freezer.
Question: I planted some passionflower seeds in individual carton like pots about 6 weeks ago? They are placed by the kitchen window sill and STILL there are no signs of life! They get watered every other day but I have noticed the carton has this furry mold? Too much water maybe? When do the seeds sprout? And how can I prevent this furry stuff?
Answer: Watering seeds every other day is too much water even if the drainage is good. If the containers are furry and the seeds have not germinated yet the probably won't. Start over again. When seeds are planted the soil should be moist but not wet. Do not water again until the seeds have sprouted and have the first set of true leaves (which is actually the second set of leaves). Then water very lightly only about once a week.
Question: Can you find passionflower in Hong Kong? Can you find passionflower in Hong Kong?
I am looking for passionflower, Acacia, wild lettuce, kava, catnip and chamomile.
Where can I fid these specifically?
Answer: Hong Kong is a prospering city within the draconian authoritarian Chinese Communist rule. Since the Chinese takeover of 1997, the Hong Kong city began a gradual descent in economic competitiveness. The central government in Beijing funneled resources from Hong Kong to other parts of China, similar to a "brain drain". Hong Kong is slowly assimilated by the Chinese authority and is becoming marginalised in the vast numbers of Chinese counterparts.
Question: How do I protect my passionflower vines from being stripped bare by gulf fritillary caterpillars?
Answer: Plant more vines. The butterflys are worth it.
You can hand pick them. Best option.
maybe try some Bt spay.
Plant some parasitic wasp attracting plants. Most wildflowers (native to your area) will do. Cilantro I think is one. Yarrow.
Do NOT use and pesticides. Just a yucky thing to do.
Question: Does Valerian and Passionflower actually work for General Anxiety Disorder? I have been experiencing GAD for about 6 months now and i cannot afford a doctors prescription...so I am turning to Natural Remedies to help me feel a little bit better if any one could relate please help me out.
Answer: My friends, family and I have personally found a lot of success with Seredyn. It's an all-natural supplement designed to help with symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks. The main active ingredients are Passion Flower, Valerian, and L-Theanine. You can learn more about why these ingredients are included in the Seredyn formula at http://www.seredyn.com/formula.html
Try Google-ing "Alternative Medication for Anxiety" - It seems like there's some good info there about how to naturally overcome anxiety symptoms without prescription medications.
Start there and continue learning about different alternatives. Everyone's different, so the best long-term approach is to continue to educate yourself and find what works best for you.
Hopefully this information is of some help. All the best!
Question: My red passionflower vine 's leaves have been eaten by some insect. I thought my plant has cyanide and is poi How much leaves eaten before you get poisoned?
Answer: Passion flowers attract one particular caterpillar, and they eat on it, and it's harmless to them. I allow mine to be eaten, because the butterfly's the pillars grow into are lovely, besides they should be about done about this time of year, it won't harm it, it just looks really bad.
if you opt for something to stop it, try a nice soapy water. They hate the taste of it and it won't hurt the plant. Dawn will do just fine.
Question: What is passionflower extract good for I heard the aroma is great for anxiety.?
Answer: Passion Flower is used as a mild sedative and sleep aid. Though few clinical trials have been conducted on Passion Flower, the herb has been used widely in Europe, and it is beginning to get attention in America as well.
Passion Flower is the main ingredient of a sleeping pill in Germany and a popular herbal sedative in the United Kingdom. In Romania, a patented chewing gum containing Passion Flower is used as a sedative. The herb is also used to treat fatigue and nervousness.
It is believed that Passion Flower has an effect on the nervous system that makes it useful in treating these ailments. The active ingredients in Passion Flower are unknown, but it is thought that the alkaloids and flavonoids it contains are among the most active of its components. A variety of other substances, including amino acids and sterols, are also said to support the actions of Passion Flower.
In addition to being used as a sedative and sleep aid, Passion Flower has been used in the treatment of asthma, circulatory problems and symptoms of menopause. It also has pain-relieving and antispasmodic effects.
Passion Flower is thought to affect the nervous system in several ways. Interestingly, it can act as both a sedative and a stimulant. In fact, it is sometimes used as a hallucinogen at very high doses, though its primary therapeutic use is as a sedative.
Question: How do I get my Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata a.k.a. Maypop) to set fruit? I bought some Passion Flower plants (Passiflora incarnata a.k.a. Maypop) and am hoping they will eventually set fruit. The seller told me they are self-fruiting, yet I'm not so sure. I would hate to wait until they bloom, just to find out they won't self-fertilize!
Does anybody know for sure if they are or are not self-fruiting? Is there a way I can find out (without waiting until it's too late)?
If they aren't self-fruiting, do I need to get the same type of plant for fertilization, or a different species of Passion Flower (which one?) Or does it not matter?
I'm not worried about pollination, plenty of bees and butterflies around! :)
Thanks!
Thanks Glenn, I know they grow wild in many areas, but definitely nowhere near me (NYC). So I just wonder whether you might actually have several plants growing near you, and it is being pollinated by them?
Answer: i have a pink passiflora (that sounds a little obscene, now i look at it), and it has fruited ever since it started flowering. and i haven't seen a single other one anywhere in my quadrant of the city. it fruits quite prolifically.
Question: Will blueberries, passionflower and honeysuckle grow in the same area together?
Answer: If they have enough space, they will!
Question: I'm depressed, and still addicted to opium/alchohol.. what can i do? im 17 and a guy. i've been depressed for a couple of months now really bad. i've been trying natural remedies, like st. johns wort, passionflower, 5-htp, but wort and 5-htp made my mood swings 100 x worse, and i would get home from school and cry for no reason and that just wasn't normal so i went off them. i also have suicidal thoughts almost everyday, and my emotions change within hours and i can go from suicidal to euphoria when nothing has changed. in the summer i started doing opium a lot, i had basically as much as i wanted, because i grew it all my self... i litterly had enough opium poppies so be high all day long for months.. and i did. all i did everyday was get up, make poppy teas for the day and smoke opium through out the day.. and do the same thing the next. i did it probably about 5 times a week, sometimes more or less.. but when i did do opium, i did it all day long.. and my tollerance got super high. my friends cud get high off 1 1/2 opium teas and that wud be enough.. while i could take as much as SEVEN teas, as well as being drunk at the same time... opium wasn't the best thing in the world, i would much rather weed to be honest.. in august i started combing the opium and the alcohol together.. and then it seems i got "hooked" on it, the sedation of the alcohol and the euphoria of the opiates were so great together.. they made any negative emotions i had disappear altogether, then whenever i did opium, i drank alcohol on it as well... i would try to overdose on it, i wud drink opium and beer from morning to night but just end up passing out in the end. sometimes it seemed i loved to get sick from them, or to be barely breathing from too much opium. its been a couple weeks now since ive combined both, i miss it... a lot. its not just the opium, or the alcohol, its them together that i love.. and now, my opium poppies are long dead and i have no opiates, and its hard to go from a 2 month opium binge to nothing at all... my depression has got so much worse since i stopped,i think about killing myself off them all the time... i've never told my parents any of this, they know i have problems with alcohol but they know nothing of the opiates or my depression... i can never sleep, my brain wil never shot off.. i want to go to my doctor but.. i always chicken out in the end. i dont know what to do... im still smoking weed everyday, and it helps me with the mood swings/cravings a lot... if it wasn't for weed i would have overdosed long ago.
any advice for me... or natural anti-depressants that i shud give a try?
Answer: wow sweetheart i feel for u.My bf has come off opium quite a few times its nothing fun. It makes you all depressed & stuff. I am not sure to tell you what to do. You need to get on some sorta medication for depression. I don't think you want to tell your parents from my understanding. If you need someone to chat with im here. I understand every thing about withdrawing. My bf also smokes pot to. So ya hit me up if you like some time.
Question: best sleeping pill for chronic insomnia? i was born with insomnia, mine is a genetic disease b/c even before preschool i took forever to fall asleep & it still stubbornly continues today (im 18 now). my mind doesnt shut off ever & whats worse is that even after staying awake ALL NIGHT, IM NOT TIRED the next day. its like i have no sleep cycle in my brain thanks to my bullsh*t asshole mom for passing me this disease.
i have tried nearly every "sleep hygiene" and even though i may felt somewhat tired i was still awake all night anyway. EVERY NATURAL pill NEVER WORKED for me ever, melatonin, l-theanine, 5-htp, valerian, passionflower, natural fragrances etc etc DIDNT DO SH*T FOR ME, i was in fact even more awake. so any claim that a product combining all of these will NEVER WORK on me.
i have no choice but to be a pill popper now so what is a non-addictive pill that will get me to sleep fast and keep me alseep all night? im talking a LONG TERM SLEEPING PILL b/c i was BORN WITH INSOMNIA. i know its rare but im a victim so dont tell me more garbage like stress therapy or sleep hygiene. NO TRYPTOPHAN FOOD WORKS EITHER, THEY'RE GARBAGE.
i heard lunesta has bad side effects & that ambien & sonata are short term so what would be a guranateed pill for someone who has chronic insomnia for 18+ years?
also how much do these cost without a doctor visit b/c i only have 15$ and im not telling my parents who are against drugs even though natural stuff is very useless for me. i was once sedated with an aneastethic drug but can you get them at the store?
please help me, i am serious & desperate b/c every other night now i am awake all night for no reason (im not even stressed). what is a guaranteed safe pill that NEVER LOSES EFFECTIVENESS?
Answer: I've had insomnia for like a year I feel your pain. All of them are addicting, but I'd still go with Ambien. It works. Or you could try flexiril (cylobenzaprine) it will knock your ass out. Though again very addicting.
Question: where do i buy pure ethanol for drinking? let me explain. I have started getting interested in making herbal remedies for insomnia and other problems people have. So i started do some research and found a good site for beginners like myself. How ever it said i needed to make Tincture of passionflower. So i did some research and found that to make tincture you need to fill a jar with the type of herb you are using and " a spirit of 40°C pure ethanol ". So my little warning light popped up in my head when the word Ethanol came up. I thought you could not drink Ethanol. So where do I find pure Ethanol? i would assume at a liquor store or something if it is safe to drink. Also what is a spirit in measurement form? ( Sorry if i misspelled anything)
no i am not trying to kill myself and i am just curious folks that's it.
Answer: No apology necessary for any spelling errors. (next time try spell check)
But if you are going to really drink that stuff, please call 911 first.
You are totally nuts and about to commit a real crime....suicide.
Question: Bach Rescue Remedy & other relievers? I have read about Bach R.R, and about other herbs like Passionflower, Valerian,Kava and regular body needs- Pantothenic acid,
Calcium,Magnesium,B vitamins etc but has anyone ever tried more then one herb? They're mostly all for anxiety so Im unsure of what to get. I need something to relieve anxiety, stress, and help with blood sugar possibly? I am taking fish oil supplements [and iron:out of the topic but it helps more with concentration too, I am anemic] to help my concentration and focus. I think I may be already taking lots but Im into natural remedies :) Thanks
Answer: Bach RESCUE Remedy is the best for anxiety but again they are used just for that situation of anxiety. I have clients who use this when anxiety flares up and in the meantime they use other forms of alternative healing to work on keeping their normal every day life stress free as possible and use the Bach Resuce Remedy when things get to much for them. I recommend to them to use a few different forms of energy healing to help with their concentration levels and focus as well as relaxation such as Usui Reiki, Concentration Reiki and either Protection Healing Orb or Rainbow Orb for energy forms to mange their anxiety from a more natural standpoint without to many physical things interfering with their physical body - and if something major happens then they use the Bach as these other forms have been able to keep their anxiety down a quite a bit! Hope this helps answer your question!
Question: My toddler needs your help...? I am a mother of a 3 year old boy and I am begging any parent out there for guidance. I have tried every technique there is to get my son to fall asleep. Chamomile tea half an hour before going to bed, Passionflower tea, was told it had the same affect, Lavender in every manner (bath time ritual, tea, oils), we have tried coffee as one of the doctors suggestions (counter reaction) (( didn't work, made it worse)), we have tried set bedtime with no tv, no radio, that didn't work so we went back to the tv and radio, we have tried story time, and many many more, nothing and I mean nothing is working we have spoke with the doctor again only to have her say there is nothing wrong and that it is normal after she suggested the coffee. We won't try TRANQUILIZERS, sorry but to us it is torture ( that was the doctors last resort.) He doesn't fall asleep until one in the morning some nights and some even later. The latest was 5 then he awoke at 8 ready to go again naps are out of the question. He will not lay down to take them and I am not about to harm my baby just to have him sleep 30 min. to an hour ( I was told by one parent to duct tape him to bed). I know 5-6 hours of sleep is not enough for him at this age and I can tell because his learning abilities have decreased, and truthfully I am scared. Please if there is anything at all anyone could do to give me advice on this please help please. If any of this sounds messed up I am sorry I am also sleep deprived.. Oh and one more thing I forgot to mention is there another way you could call bedtime bedtime but not say bedtime, because by mentioning bedtime he screams and cries...
have a thought and alexis m I have tried that already... This has gone on for 5 months...
Answer: Over excitement usually gets my kids to bed.

Answer: You should see a doctor and maybe think about rehab.
Question: passiflora incarnata? I just got one and I started reading up on it...there are some sources that say that it is toxic....but is that in high doses? does the taste keep ppl away from it? I know you can eat the fruit too but one source siad to be sure its ripe...when do they ripen. We used to eat the ligularis species in Peru but bought the fruit.....I have children and I want to know if I have to keep them away from it or get rid of it or just teach them not to eat it....I really want a passionflower and was told this wa sthe only one that would thrive in my zone (6B)
Answer: There are more than 500 species of passiflora in the passion flower family and some of them are poisonous.
But not Passiflora incarnata: it`s leaves and roots are used as medicine and the fruit is very tasty.
This species contents some toxic ingredients ( harman alkaloides, cyanogenetic glycosises ), but concentration is so minimal, that even children are not harmed. On the other hand these ingredients are to find in roots and fresh foliage and they have such a bitter taste, nobody would eat them.
Some publications issue the warning that it is harmfull for hares and rabbits.
Another nontoxic species is P. edulis, the Maracuja plant.
Poisonous species are P. caerulea f.e. and some glass house hybrids:
http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph41.htm
So make sure that your plant is Passiflora incarnata and nothing else!

Question: Is the maypop passionflower poisonous to animals? ?
Answer: Found on springboard4health.com:
Passion flower has been commonly used in the treatment of nervous, high-strung, easily excited children; cardiovascular neuroses; bronchial asthma; coronary illness; circulation weakness; insomnia; problems experienced during menopause; concentration problems in school children; and in geriatrics. There is some experimental support for these applications.
Passion flower appears completely nontoxic, and has been approved for food use by the FDA.
It has been also tested on lab rats.
Question: Do you know how to extract the oils from a selection of herbs? I want to create an extract of oils that originated from herbs such as passionflower and catnip and many others. Does anybody know how?
Answer: Related to your examples passionflower and catnip I suppose, that you want to extract essential oils.
There are the methods of maceration, either with an organic solvent like ethanol or enfleurage with fat,
the distillation ( best steam distillation ),
solvent extraction ( most used solvent: ethanol ) and
mechanical expression.
The method goes according to the quantity of oil, the part of plant containing it and the characteristics of oil, e.g. Citrus-oil ( in skin of fruits )is produced by mechanical pressure, catnip oil ( in herb ) by steam distillation, rose oil (in flowers, very delicate and expensive ) by enfleurage.
