Palm Oil
Question: How do i start palm oil trading business? I am in Malaysia which produce palm oil. I would like to start palm oil trading business. What is the steps? and what do i start?
Answer: What part of the business do you want to access? Do you have access to supply? Distribution? End-users? Or do you have a trading background? Its a huge business - Malaysia is the worlds largest producer of Palm Oil - if you're going to get in and mix it with the big boys, you're going to need some angle....just being in the country isn't quite enough....
Question: Is palm oil safe in shelf-stable foods like cookies and crackers? I know hydrogenated palm oil has tons of transfats, but I'm seeing non-hydrogenated palm oil in products like Newman's Own cookies and Skippy Natural peanut butter. Neither show any transfats on their labels, but I'm curious as to whether or not I should be concerned regardless.
Answer: Palm oil is naturally high in saturated fats, and some manufacturers even hydrogenate their palm oil to create a fully-saturated fat.
Some points about saturated fats:
* have a relatively long shelf life compared to mono- or poly-unsaturated fats, and fully saturated fats even longer.
* have a higher melting point -- that is, they stay solid at room temperatures, whereas mono- and poly-unsaturated fats are almost always liquid at room temperature (olive oil, canola oil, etc.)
* are more difficult for your body to break down
* taste slightly better. (As Emeril says: pork fat rules!)
In fact, unsaturated fats require refridgeration to stay good for a good length of time, which is why you are supposed to keep food high in unsaturated fats like wheat germ, almonds, or cod liver oil in the fridge.
Edible oils are made out of strings of fatty acid chains. Each fatty acid can have all of its bonds taken up by hydrogen atoms giving a saturated fatty acid. If one or more of these carbon bonds are not taken up by a hydrogen atom, that creates an unsaturated fatty acid. If one of the fatty acids in the chain is unsaturated, that is a mono-unsaturated fat. If many of them are unsaturated, it is called a poly-unsaturated fats. To be "fully saturated", every fatty acid in an oil must be a saturated one. "Hyrdogenating" means that you force some of the unsaturated fatty acids to accept a new hydrogen atom, thus making them saturated. Manufacturers use hydrogenation to give oils that are cheaper to produce the qualities of saturated fats listed above.
Trans fats are fats that have both their carbon bonds for each fatty acid on opposite sides of the molecule. The opposite is cis fats, which have both bonds on the same side. Studies have shown that trans fats create all manner of health problems, and should be generally avoided. Any fat, including unsaturated ones can include trans fatty acids in their chains, and should be avoided. The worst of course is saturated fats that have trans fatty acids in them, like some hydrogenated margarines. (And we used to think that margarine was better for us than butter!)
So, your cookies and crackers should last a pretty good amount of time, and of course, are not so healthy for you.
Question: How has the Palm Oil industry affected Deforestation in Borneo? How has the Palm Oil Industry affected Deforestation in Borneo?
- Has The Palm Oil Indusry made it even worse? How and why?
Answer: To grow Palm trees and so harvest palm oil, the native (rain-forest) trees, that provide a habitat for many animal, insect and plant species, are simply slashed and burnt to provide open spaces. In these open spaces, palm trees are planted. The problem is that the rain forest is unable to grow palm trees for more than a year or two before the nutrients in the soil has been used up. The palm trees are then abandoned and slash and burn is done else where in the rain forest. Secondary tree growth takes place amongst the abandoned palm trees, but such secondary growth will never achieve the height or habitat value of the original virgin rain forest.
Question: What is the cause of excessive consumption of palm oil in deep frying? I fry noodles in palm oil and the average oil absorbtion is between 19 and 21% but the consumption/loss of oil at the end of the day is 29%. Does the oil evaporate? What can reduce this loss if it is real
Answer: Have you noticed that when you put oil under high heat, its viscosity increases?
Because of increased viscosity, there's less of the oil.
Question: Why does palm oil and coconut oil break me out? Almost immediatlely after consuming something with it in it I get zits. I had a snack with palm oil in it and when I went to the restroom, i could see the beginning of one form on my cheek, it's not fair.
Answer: you're probably allergic to it. that happens to me when i eat chocolate :(
Question: Is Palm Oil not good for health if its used for for cooking? The Indian government encourages everyone to use them by giving them at a subsidized rate but the doctors have not come out openly to say whether its healthy or not.But privately they advice not to use for cooking
So I would like to know whether palm oil is injurious to health if its used for cooking
Thanks so much for your concern Maria
Can you say whether oils like Rice Bran oil or Sun-flower is safe to use?
Answer: Palm Oil = Saturated Fat!
Many packaged cookies now boast that they contain 0 g of trans fat. However, this may not be the great news that it seems to be. In order to minimize or eliminate the use of trans-fat-laden partially hydrogenated oil, some food manufacturers have replaced it with saturated-fat-laden palm oil and palm kernel oil – which may not be much better for you!
Numerous health authorities have warned against the use of palm oil in packaged foods. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute warned that the "high content of saturated fat... found in... palm kernel oil, palm oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter" puts people at risk for heart attack or stroke. Indeed, the World Health Organization has also warned there is "convincing evidence" that palmitic acid increases the risk of heart disease.
Dear Black Mamba don't use it for cooking.
I want you to live a long life.
Question: What brands of lotion are out there that do not contain any palm oil? I love lotion, for hands, face and body. I refuse to stop using it. I just want to find ones that are better for the environment and more specifically do not contain palm oil. Ones available in Canada would be most ideal. Thanks!
Answer: This seems painfully obvious, but... why not read the labels when you're purchasing lotion next time???
Question: How do you expose the people who are at the top of the palm oil industry? Having spent this week watching the orangutan diaries on bbc, I really feel absolutely disgusted that over 10 million acres of forest have SO FAR been destroyed for Palm Oil Plantations. We have a right to know just who the owners and supporters of the palm oil industries are , then we can all make our own descisions to boycott theses people and their companies and products. FOR GODS SAKE STOP THIS INSANITY NOW.
How do we start this ball rolling???????
Answer: It is more effective and thus productive if this problem is looked at from a holistic point of view not just an attempt to pigeon - hole it as a particular industry specific malaise.
When you find a solution to the present distortion in the world economic system between the system of production and the inequality in its eventual distribution, then you would have found the way out.
The present system is driven by greed for profit which must be met by the unholy exploitation and excessive use of both the human and material resources including the plunder of the forests, available within the society.
There is therefore a link between these structures of exploitation and to address it therefore, we must address the process of distorted excessive consumption for the bye- products of these industry in some sections of the globe which in turn drives demand for and then the on - going plunder.
The chain, must be identified which I know is very long, and then severed but what I ask, given the picture we have seen, is it possible to destroy it without causing a major socio-political upheaval?
Thanks and I wish you good luck in your quest.
Question: How can i get the latest reports about palm oil trading ? Hi , every one . I would like to know the latest news or reports about palm oil prices .

Question: What is palm oil? Why is the world converting rainforests to plantations? Okay I have 3 questions. I have searched online but it is all so complicated and I can't seem to find a straight answer.
- What exactly is palm oil?
- Does it produce any kind of pollution especially when used as a biofuel?
-Why are rainforests being turned into palm oil plantations?
Thanks
Answer: Here's a very simple answer:
Palm oil is an oil (A bit like olive or sunflower oil, but cheaper and of lower quality) that is used in loads of products, from cakes to shampoo.
When used as a biofuel, they produce some pollution, as burning any fuel does. However, it produces much less than petrol or oil.
Rainforests are being turned into palm oil plantations because it is in such high demand. So much needs to be harvested that there isn't enough farmland, so more needs to be created. This means that places where palm can be grown, like the tropics, are turning rainforest into plantations to make large amounts of money. However, this means that the habitats for thousands of beautiful creatures are destroyed, so they usually end up being killed.
As I said, it's very simple, but I don't know how much detail you need?
Question: What is your view on Palm Oil as an alternative energy resource? Oil Palm plantations are growing at rapid rates in the tropical nations of Indonesia and Malaysia. These lands were once covered by upwards to 90% rain forest just a century ago, while that has declined presently to less than 50%. This is due largely to oil palm plantations. Palm oil has been used historically as a cooking and cosmetics additive with other uses. However, the palm oil industry is now booming with its realization of clean energy. Europe has turned to this clean energy in hopes of reducing the global warming problem. Palm oil is about 8-10 times as efficient as ethanol for power. However, rainforests are being slashed and burned at record rates in these nations, to make room for more palm oil plantations. These areas which were a rich are for trees and plants as well as animals are now being turned into an oil palm monoculture for profits. Think about how the atmosphere is effected when dense rain forests are being burnt down at blinding speeds.
Answer: I don't think using straight Palm Oil as an alternative energy resource is a good idea. I do think, however, that using Palm Oil biowaste from these mills would be a better alternative energy source that would help to elliviate potential groundwater contaminants.
Solid and liquid biomass waste is a renewable source of energy that could potentially be transformed into electricity, gas, bio-diesel and fertilizer to serve remote rural areas and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
I think if we educate the producers in this area about the potential their waste products have, we could influence them to conserve and become more aware of the impact they have on the local, regional and global environment. All businesses want to realize the savings of running an efficient operation. Therefore, showing that their waste by-products may hold lucrative potential may be just the incentive needed to spark this effort to "green-up" their biz.
Question: what else besides palm oil and lard produce a hard bar of soap? I don't really have access to palm oil in my area and I don't like using animal products like lard in my soap. What else produces a nice hard bar of soap? Would vegetable shortening work? it is high in saturated fats and is solid at room temperature. I was under the impression that hydrogenated oils (like coconut and palm) produce hard soaps.
Answer: A couple of decent sites you might want to try are:
www.teachsoap.com
www.candleandsoap.about.com
My grandmother used to brag that during WWII, she made the whitest soap on the block.
Have fun and lather up
Question: Can I use pressed palm oil shortening as a skin moisturizer? I was recently visiting a friend, who got out her tub of pressed palm oil shortening and invited me to try it on my hands. It was a little sticky but seemed to keep my hands from drying out for many hours. (We live at 5500 feet with dry, desert air.) Any comment? Any downside to using shortening as a moisturizer? It's certainly cheaper than commercial moisturizers. Thanks.
Answer: I personally would not,but there is a old remedy use vaseline which is much safer on your hands and feet at night and wrap in plastic,in the morning you will be happy with the results...Hope this helps!!
Question: Is there no alternative to palm oil or will the rainforest be gone to make way for more palm trees? I'm watching Saving Planet Earth on BBC1 (UK) and seeing what is happening to these poor creatures is heartbreaking not to mention seeing the beautiful rainforest being bulldozed to make way for palm tree plantations. Why can't something be done about finding an alternative to palm oil instead of just raising money to fund homes for these homeless wild animals. Why should we allow this to happen? It's a disgrace and something needs to be done.
I don't mean for cooking but companies are using this oil in everything from toothpaste to biscuits and the demand is so great that the rainforest will all but disappear if this continues.
Answer: I don't know the answer but I wish I did!
I'd never heard of palm oil before and am in the process of doing some research on it and how I can avoid purchasing products containing it.

Question: I deal in palm oil business and i am looking for the countries that will need my palm oil products? palm oil products are used for production of creams and other related good and it is used for cooking also.
Answer: What does this have to do with PDAs (personal digital assistants) and handhelds (you know, like smart phones)?
Question: Do all products with Palm Oil list it clearly as one of its ingredients? I heard some horrible things about the use of palm oil. I want to stop using it. How do i know if a product i have or buy has any of that crap in it?
Answer: Yeah. It's usually listed as sodium laureth sulphate, but sometimes under other names. I'm sure if you do a search on it you'll be able to find the other names. And good on you - I've stopped using anything with palm oil in it, and if nothing else, my skin is very happy for it. Of course, you'll help save rainforests and animals by using alternative products, too, so go for it :)
Question: What are the positive and negative impacts of palm oil? I'm doing a project about palm oil can you plz help me with the positive and negative impacts???
Answer: download the below PDF and read it out .........it will help u very much

Question: Where do you buy "Palm oil" from in Perth, Western Australia? I need to purchase some 'Palm oil' because im having an allergy test and apparantly i could be allergic to palm oil, amongst many other things. Can anyone please tell me where I could find Palm oil to buy in Perth, Western Australia?
Answer: I don't know for sure, but would think that you would find it at your local health store, the chemist(maybe) or maybe in the oil section at your local supermarket. If you are having an allergy test wouldn't they have the palm oil available for testing. The last time my son had testing done they had all the items ready to use in the correct proportions? Unless you have been told to bring the palm oil yourself I would check with where you are being tested as to who supplies it.
Question: Is there products similar to Nutella that do not contain palm oil? The reason I ask is because I love Nutella but I DON'T love the fact that palm oil farms are destroying the orangutan's habitat...

Thanks!
Answer: Almost all of our produce/products are killing some sort of animals habitat.
