Question: /question/index?qid=20081124145411AA0F0R5 How come people are losing their jobs? What triggered this whole thing?
Answer: On face value the thing that caused this financial crisis was the collapse of the banking system in the US. This was down to the collapse of sub-prime mortage lenders. (Sub-prime mortgages were those provided to people who were deemed to have a high risk of defaulting on the payment. The idea is to essentially cripple these people with debt and then have them paying back the loans with interest untill there in their graves.)
Unfortunately these companies didn't just bankrupt themselves, but they affected all the other institutions that had investments with them. The result was essentially a dominoe effect felt all over the globe.
This is what sparked the collapse of the system in general. However in order to really identify the true reasons for the collapse you have to delve a little deeper into the murky waters to find the real root of the problem.
Lets take the case of sub-prime mortage lending. This is a practice whereby you lend people money knowing full well that the lendee is probably unable to pay the money back. The practice therefore carries a huge amount of risk to the people doing the lending. However people within the mortgage companies were willing to take this risk because it meant bigger bonuses for themselves in the short term. They knew that the risks to the companies themselves were huge, but they also knew that making short term profits would give them huge bonuses in the short term. But the pattern for all to see through this process is that people are willing to use, exploit and jeopardise other people for their own gain. In short the cause of this crisis is our egoistic attitude towards each other. That's the real cause of this problem and in order for us to deal with this problem we have to identify that fact.

Question: /question/index?qid=20080317171718AAJVbto Will the muffins still turn out well?
Answer: it shouldn't affect it too much, just make sure they're mashed up enough, and possibly add a little extra sugar . :) good luck!
Question: /question/index?qid=20081112015047AAeHyvb I would like to find a news article that has some ethical objections and concerns. Any suggestions?
Great contributions so far, but I'm am looking for an actual article... But the suggestions on ideas are still great!
Answer: Here's one that deals with both ethics and law:
The issue of Ted Stevens and his potential re-election. Mr. Stevens was indicted on seven felony counts. The definition of a felony is a crime punishable by a minimum of one year in a state prison, resulting in the person losing their right to vote and their right to hold elected office. According to definition, Mr. Stevens should be spending a minimum of seven years in jail and be forbidden to run for re-election. Instead, Mr. Stevens was convicted of all seven felonies and, because he is still running for re-election, he may not spend a day in jail. Also, being in the spotlight and the public eye, he is still going to hold that elected office.
This holds up with the statements about the legal system being about who you know and how much money you have. If "Joe" on the corner was charged with seven felonies, you can bet your next paycheck he's gonna do at least a little jail time. Now here's this sleazy politician in the public eye getting off scot free.
How is it ethical to enforce the law on people who are low income and political nobodies, but to let someone like Steven's rest above the law? This makes everyone else look at his crime and say "Hey, now I can get away with that too because the U.S. is partially based on case law."
This is neither ethical nor legal and it speaks directly to the ethics of the legal system.
Question: /question/index?qid=20081112015554AARPqGQ Think the economy is going to be destroyed. The Communists always did destroy the nations and the people suffered greatly. This system doesn't work at all----it has been proved to fail every time.
Answer: For this election, i really didn't care who won. It really didn't matter. Who ever is in office is going in with half the country hating them, were so divided like that. The only difference between Mccain and Obama being in office is that Obama has congress on his side. So pretty much anything can be made law if he can convince the Democratic party it's necessary. The down side of that is that congress only needs about 10 non democrat congressman to vote out any given bill and it becomes law if he veto's something. So theoretically congress has more power now then it did during Bush's term, and that was a lot.
That being said, I'm not for him...on the other hand, i wasn't for Mccain either. But the Congress being the way it is, i was more for Mccain. As for Obama's proposed agenda, as long as he doesn't go through with his universal health care plan, i really couldn't care less AT THIS POINT. I don't know, that could change.
The way i see his health care plan is the way i see taxes. Taxes SUCK but are completely necessary. Without them, our country fails. You think our economy is bad now...(shivers)
Universal health care, ya, that'd be awesome. Everybody has health care, no worries right? Well, it's just not realistic, just like no taxes. His Universal health care plan gives each person a certain amount of times they can go to the hospital... ??? How does that work? Lets say i have a medical problem, and i have to have multiple surgeries per year, not to mention countless doctor visits, medications, X-rays etc. How does that work? And then there's the average couch potato, never hurt, rarley sick, etc. How is that fare?
Now lets set all that aside. Lets say that that does work. did you know the goverment already bails out all the hospitals in Amarica every year, for millions and millions of dollars? The money not given to the hospital has to get back to them somehow, otherwise hospitals fail. So lets say Obama's plan is put into action, and all these hospital visits are backed by the goverment, where are they getting the money? Not from taxes, Obama wants to lower taxes. But wouldn't he have to raise taxes to pay for this goverment funded healthcare plan? Hmmmmm...something doesn't add up.
Just so we can be clear, i don't like Mccain's idea either. He said he wanted to basicaly reverse the way the money is used between economy, the people, and healthcare companies, by taxing health care companies as income from the money you pay them for coverage to spread around to people who don't have coverage. Which when explained properly atleast shows the rotation of money, called the economy, but it's just not efficient enough.

Question: /question/index?qid=20081126122332AAblX0A I have very bad asthma, and I am a competitive swimmer, and I am practicing 4 hours a day in a pool with high chlorine levels. I experience coughing and restricted airways. Recently I had a asthma/panic attack one night when the ventilation wasn't working, and they had to call the paramedics. What should the chlorine levels be and how do we ( swimmers) know when they are too high? Thanks.
Answer: I agree with "sarah" you should consult your doctor. Any medical related questions should be answered by a medical professional.. YOUR DOCTOR.
But to answer the chlorine level question, "normal" pool chlorine levels should be maintained between 1.5-5ppm as measured by a proper test kit.

Question: /question/index?qid=20081221210935AAN5XAd My sister just came home for Christmas and she couldn't wait to tell us (her husband was on the speaker phone), Now he is coming in town Tuesday and we want to do something special for them. This is the first baby in our family! We thought about going out to a nice restaurant, but since my sister is having morning sickness that doesn't seem like a good idea.
I'd love to hear some suggestions! Thank you!
Answer: Dear Auntie,
I love parties and celebrations at home, everyone gets to relax and the fun can get a bit loud and no one yells at you.
Now get a copy of the song Having My Baby..... its a little bit back there but not ancient.
go to a party store and get a thing that hangs across the doorway announcing Having My Baby or We're Having A Baby , make a cake with a baby theme on top of the cake , remembering the sex may not be established as yet.
Oh just remembered Ha. Go to www. hp.com/go/activitycenter
and make sure it comes up Hewlett-Packard there are some sites that say hp and are something else totally . Now its all free and there are places that have Baby shower items and thank you cards with the imprint of a babys foot with the word baby in different pastel colors. I know because I got it all done for my daughter in law who had twin girls this July . they have games and answers who attended list, gift list and so on. oh so cute. and the most precious Baby Card where cards are and it says Baby, you'll just die,,,,,,,,,
Now you can all get together and buy the baby to be its first gift. Why not an intercom system that the parents will thank you over and over again. one goes in the babies room and the other two can go in your bedroom at night and down stairs or in the kitchen or livingroom whereever they are. We got them one and it helped one of the girls who had problems breathing and we believe it helped save her life.
If you are looking for a super punch its easy; for every can of Minute maid Punch add about 2/3 of a 2 liter of 7up or Sprite and make ice cubes of the punch and put frozen fruit of strawberries and melon balls and so on in the punch. if its kept real super cold it gets froffy and people have accused me of spiking the punch. I'm enjoying your question.
Simplyshy Good luck

Question: /question/index?qid=20080501115730AAkOftZ The energy to accelerate a starship comes from combining matter and antimatter. When this is done the total rest energy of the matter and antimatter is converted to other forms of energy. Suppose a starship with a mass of 2.5x10^5 kg accelerates to 0.5380c. How much matter and antimatter must be converted to kinetic energy for this to occur?
the answer is 4.7 x 10^4
Answer: Ignoring the relativistic mass increase of the starship, the final kinetic energy of the starship is
Ek = (1/2)mv^2 = (1/2)*(2.5*10^5)*(.538*3*10^8)^2
and the total mass of matter and antimatter required is
m = Ek/(c^2)
The mass of antimatter required would be the same as the mass of matter so each would be half of the total mass you calculate.
If you -do- need to take into account relativistic mass increase, it's given by
m = m0/(sqrt(1-(v/c)^2))
where m is relativistic mass, m0 is rest mass, v is velocity, and c is 3*10^8 .

Doug
Question: /question/index?qid=20080501115912AAxptM3 I hear Sharpton is planning on demonstrating but that's no big surprise. Do they think there will be rioting in major cities in America with large black populations?

Say 50g / 1/2 bar and approx. 100 ml whipping / double / thick cream - but use good quality white choc - some have a lot of added sugar, vanilla and other gunk!
It will have to be used straight away as it will harden as it cools - or can be re-heated.
