L-Lysine
Question: Anyone ever hear of using L-Lysine for nerve inflammation in humans? I have a lot of overall pain and think some or all of it might be related to nerve inflammation. I read an update my mother received from, I assume a homepathic-article didn't say what his title was, regarding pain in her right side. One of the recommendations was taking 500 mg of L-Lysine with each meal. Anyone else have that recommendation made to them for nerve inflammation.
Answer: Thanks for the question. I had not heard of that but I found this link which may be of interest to you:
http://www.krysalis.net/rheumatism.htm
Perhaps if the inflammation is linked to a virus then that might explain why l-lysine might give some benefit in certain inflammatory states linked to auto-immune disease. It is certainly worth trying.
Also consider these anti-inflammatory supplements:
turmeric [curcumin component, ginger [for inflammation and pain], fish oil, bromelain [inbetween meals] and boswelia or devil's claw for the pain.
St John's wort might help with inflammation of nerves [neuritis] too and also skullcap.
You need to talk to your GP first before taking herbal supplements if you are on any prescribed medications to be sure that anything you might want to try will not interact with your meds in a negative way.
B complex vitamins are a good choice for the nervous system as a whole. Opt for a time released version of strength B50 and take once or twice a day...depending on how "frayed" your nerves feel. I would also suggest sublingual B12 additionally.

Question: I know this is going to sound stupid, but is L-lysine Hydrochloride the same as L-lysine Monohydrochloride? I know this is going to sound stupid, but is L-lysine Hydrochloride the same as L-lysine Monohydrochloride?
They're synonyms right?
Answer: It doesn't sound stupid but it sure made me feel stupid :/
Question: how much l-lysine can i take without over dosing?I want to take a safe amount without hurting myself!? I would like to take l-lysine for my outbreaks but im not sure on how much to take. How much is to much to take?Right now i just take 1 (500mg) capsule per day.
Answer: Dosing for prevention of Herpes ranges from 500-3,000mg per day. A dose of 1,000mg per day is consider a safe dose for most patients.
Please note that higher doses are blamed for higher cholesterol and an increased risk of gallstones with no additional protection gained from the higher dose.
Question: Why is it bad to take L-lysine for more than 6 months? I take L-lysine a couple times a week as a cold sore preventative. I've been taking it on and off for maybe 2 years. The bottle says not to take it for more than 6 months but I haven't been able to find out why.
Answer: Warnings like that on a label are there to protect you and the company who sells it. There is likely some history of toxicity. Give your self a break of a month or two off and then you may try it again.
Herpes simplex may recur when you go off it. You could try to get it through dietary means, from meat, eggs (I like the Omega 3 kind), cheese, dairy, and beans.
As an alternate supplement used for the Herpes virus family, you may want to try the Paw Paw Cell-Reg from Natures Sunshine. It has demonstrated antiviral activity against the Herpes viruses. This could be your treatment when you take a break from L-lysine.
Question: Why is it that no one promotes the safer treatment of L lysine for Herpes instead of the dangerous pharmaceuti Why is it that no one promotes the safer treatment of L lysine for Herpes instead of the dangerous pharmaceuticals?
Is it all about money or is this because people are unaware like doctors?
L lysine is safer and more effective along with promoting a good healthy diet high in antioxidants.
acyclovir
causes cancer and birth defects in unborn children L Lysine does not.
I use L-lysine when I get a mouth cold sore I began getting them when I began smoking. They go away really fast and since I quit smoking I do not get them as often except under stress.
Answer: I don't think L-lysine has been proven to work. In my experience, acyclovir is far superior to lysine.
Question: Does anyone know the correct maintenance dosage of l-lysine for a 17 month old? My 17 month old has recurrent outbreaks of eczema herpeticum and I want to treat him proactively with lysine. I need help with determining the correct daily dosage, although me pediatrician agrees he doesn't know the correct amount. My son weighs about 24-25 lbs.
Answer: My pediatrcian said about 50% of the adult dosage, means 500 mg should be o. k.
My daughter weights 30 lbs
Question: Has anyone ever heard of controlling hives with L-lysine? I have been plagued with hives not only on my body but also on my face to where my eyes and lips blow up and in my mouth to where my tongue and throat swell up. I refused to use steroids. I changed my laundry detergent to All Free and use
Downey Free and Clear fabric softner. These 2 products have almost eliminated the hives on my body. When my mouth is affected I know it is something I have eaten. I began to research alternative medicine and began using 2000mg of L-lysine a day. This has almost totally diminished the hives. If I do start to feel some coming on they do not blow up to the extenet that they used too. The duration time of the hives is also shortened.
Has anyone else tried L-lysine? I have had great luck with this supplement. I hope someone else can benefit from this.
Answer: Sounds like you've got a huge allergy problem. Have you seen an allergist? You don't necessarily have to take steroids. I've used Lysine for cold sores and it more or less helps. It's making up for things you're not getting in your diet.
Question: Does anyone get really bad canker sores mostly on the tongue? Have you tried L-lysine and if so does it work? I think I am finding I get these really bad during times of stress and when I haven't gotten adequate sleep. Ambesol doesn't seem to help nor does rinsing with warm salty water. I use a tongue scraper etc. but always seem to have the worst taste in my mouth. Suggestions or remedies?
Answer: Yes! L-lysine does work they have cream and capsule form.
Question: How long does it take for L-Lysine to kick in a heal a cold sore? I bought some today and the toot paste I don't quiet think will work !!!!!
Answer: L-Lysine helped me a bit within 48 hours when it was in combination of a multi-vitamin and putting Abreva on it every few hours and not messing with it.
Question: I have a 75lb Labrador - how much L-lysine should I give him to help clear up his canine papilloma virus? He is 1 1/2 years old and this is his second outbreak. Or do you think I should use the Newton's homeopathic drops as someone suggested?
Answer: L-lysine is supposed to help with genital herpes not warts. Plus they are supposed to help humans, not to sure if you would want to give human vitamins to a dog. What helps humans could potentially harm a dog.
Take your dog to the vet or call one up and see if they can recommend some thing for your dog.
Question: How long does L-Lysine 500mg take to get rid of a cold sore, taking 2 tablets every day?
Answer: 3-4 days usually. Decrease your intake of junk food. Eat alkaline foods like fruits and veggies. Drink lots of water.
Question: What are the benefits and side effects of L-Lysine? I currently take 1000 mg if I get a cold sore in my mouth and it helps it to go away faster, but are there any other benefits or side effects to taking this on a regular basis. SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!
Answer: It may help with the production of L-carnitine, the latter which converts fatty acids into energy and helps lower LDL [bad cholesterol] levels in the bloodstream.
It may help also with collagen production. The latter which is a building block for skin, hair and nails and cartilage, tendons and connective tissue. Thus it may help keep these tissues healthy.
Other benefits:
http://vitamins.ultimatefatburner.com/l-lysine-review.html
It is an essential amino acid in that you need to obtain it in your diet and need it for health. But if you have a diet adequate in quality protein you should be able to get enough. But yes it is recommended when you have a cold sore. So taking it as a supplement helps to shift the ratio of amino acids in favour of L-lysine for an L-Lysine dominance as it may help with an herpes infection, speeding healing. At this time you should also avoid nuts and chocolate as these are rich in L-arginine that may undo the effects of L-lysine. I would only take it as needed though so when your cold sore clears stop taking the supplement as you would then want to normally balanced amino acid ratio.
You could also try Lemon balm tea as Lemon balm has anti-herpes properties. Holland and Barrett also sell a lip balm for cold sores that contains aloe vera and other active ingredients that may help speed healing.
Never touch a cold sore with your fingers as you can spread the infection this way.The worse case scenario is if the infection got in an eye as there is a risk of ulceration. So hygiene is vital. If you accidentally touch it with your fingers then wash your hands immediately with an anti-bacterial wash. Your pharmacy may have something that you can put on to act as both a seal and healer combined. I would ask a pharmacist about this as I would not depend on health products alone.
Best wishes.

Question: How does L-Lysine help fever blisters? Im looking into purchasing some but i want to know exactly what it does
is it better to get just Lysine, or L-Lysine?
If i already have a feverblister, how long will it take to heal if i start taking it now?
well considering ive gotten these things since i was, youngest i can remember 4, and ive only known them as fever blisters...so thats what theyll stay being called fever blisters
Answer: It sounds like you're taking a proactive stance and that's great. Now, stop calling these "fever blisters" or "cold sores". These are herpes lesions.
L-lysine and lysine are two names for the same amino acid. It's also called amino acid K. It's supposed to slow down the rate of herpes viral replication. Some studies have found that taking lysine on a regular basis may help prevent outbreaks of lesions. Not every study has shown positive results, however. One study found that taking lysine at the beginning of a herpes outbreak did not reduce symptoms.
I can't guarantee that taking it now will even help. I don't personally endorse lysine as a herpes outbreak treatment. I haven't seen enough data that supports this.
Question: L-lysine is a good amino acid to give to cat to get over viral upper respiratory infection. Do you know any other suggestions (foods/vitamins/amino acids/products) to give. I spoke to a vet and he recommended it and said that cats usually have 2 sorts of viruses (herpes and calicovirus) and told me L-lysine would quicken the process.
Any other recommendations? You help is well appreciated.
Answer: Your vet is correct. My MC/RD kitten is on it now. Came home from work yesterday, and he had the start of a URI, and she put him right on it. This morn, he asked for his breakfast, and is pretty much back to normal, but I caught it quick, and she wants him on it for 7 days.
When he had his eye infection and mouth infection, she put him on it each time, and he recovered very quickly.
You can get it in the vitamin section, 500 mg, one capsule, once a day. I break open the capsule and mix it with 2 heaping teaspoons of turkey baby food, mix very well, he eats it right up.
You want to get one of the higher end brands, no sugar, no starch, no fillers, I got Full Circle, ran about $9.
I also recommend Feline Missing Link vitamins. I'll give you a link, so you can see what it looks like, and the ingredients. It has Omega 3 and Omega 6, which is very important.
I got mine at Pet Smart, it comes in a gold foil pouch, has to be refriderated once opened, and lasts for about 3 months, runs around $11. The directions are per the cats weight, but I found that for him, 1/4 teaspoon works best. For his weight, 20 lbs, he should be getting alot more, but I found that any more than 1/4 teaspoon, and he either won't eat it, or it gives him diarea. I mix with about 2 heaping teaspoons of turkey baby food, but you could mix it with any canned food, just mix well.
My vet also highly recommends it, and he is a show cat, that finished in the top 10 (6th place), in Region 1 in CFA.
Hope this helps and best of luck. :-)

Question: Can I take both L-Lysine and One-A-Day Teen Advantage after dinner? Can I take both L-Lysine and One-A-Day Teen Advantage after dinner? Or are they not supposed to be combined?
I'm a little paranoid when it comes to this stuff :P I'm the type of person that won't overdose on anything no matter what...I'm too scared to lol
Thanks for the help!
Answer: There is no danger of take L-Lysine with anything Lysine is a an amino acid part of protein . Linus Pauling recommended 6 to 18 grams a day. Lysine is very safe.
Question: Did Linda lazarides ever write that vitamin C plus L-lysine reverses atherosclerosis? I mean, in her book "principles of Nutritional Therapy".
Answer: I'm not familiar with Linda Lazarides, but i know where she got that information from. A German physician, named Dr. Mathias Rath, a student of Linus Pauling {father of Othomolecular medicine/ twice noble prize winner}.
Hope this helps.
Question: Treating cat infected with herpes with l-lysine powder? I have an almost three year old cat with a recurring eye problem. After much research on my part - both about felines with herpes and finding a competent veterinarian - we are fairly certain my spayed female has herpes. We have decided to try treatment with Vet Viralys l-lysine powder. Unfortunately, my cat is not terribly interested in eating food with the powder mixed in.
Is there another way to deliver the powder? Perhaps suspended in a liquid and delivered orally with a syringe? She is a very picky eater, and we can't get her to eat any human food, and she has turned away from any wet food we mix this powder in to. She also is quite uncooperative with paste-like medicines, so I do not have high hopes for the l-lysine gel, plus since I already bought the powder, I'd like to try to use that.
I've been mixing it with wet food, and she won't eat it. Also, I've smelled it and it smells like nasty fishy, which is a very palatable cat smell. But I refuse to taste it! I've also been attempting to treat with 250mg, so I'm not giving her too much. But we still can't get her to eat it.
Answer: My cat has feline herpes as well and doesn't take to the powder at all. How does your cat do with pills? You can get l-lysine from the vitamin aisle at wal-mart, etc. This is what I have been using for my cat and it works great. The pills are somewhat large. My cat doesn't have a big problem with them (I put some butter on them to make it go down easier). These are also cheaper. You can also mix the powder up with chicken broth and use a syringe to give it to your cat. Hope this helps!
Question: Are there any side effects from taking a double dose (2000mg) of L-Lysine? I have a cold-sore and want to up my dosage just for today!
Answer: Most probably not if its just for one day. Its an amino acid and whatever your body wont use will get filtered out by your liver anyway so it would be pointless to try and take extra. There will be no benefit. What might be more beneficial is if u divide the tablet so that you are taking small amounts throughout the day, to keep your blood saturated with L-Lysine.
I am no doctor though so dont take my word for it.
Question: What is the recommended dosage for L-Lysine? Is it safe to take 1,000mg daily to prevent or lessen cold sore outbreaks? Thanks.
Answer: You should consult your doctor as to whether that dosage is safe, however i took 500mg 3x daily to combat the last round of mouth ulcers (not cold sores though) i had. It was my first time taking them and I was surprised at how effective it was at eliminating the pain.
