Indian Walnut

Question: Grandfather Ferman K.Sharp was born 11/18/1921 Walnut Grove, MS in family bible. Need proof of Indian Heritage? Mother Marylou Sharp married Howard Sharp. No birth records on file but clearly can see the Indian nationality. How or where do I start to obtain proof in writing

Answer: For what reason? For your self then you need to find family and birth, death, marriage, wills, census (U.S. Federal and Reservation), mention in an obit, marriage announcement, birth announcement. To join the membership of a Federal Recognized Tribe (if they are accepting new members) you need to identify the Tribe and have proof (birth, death, marriage certificates, wills, tribal papers) back to an Native American ancestor(s) listed on the various "Indian" Rolls taken by Fed Gov 1880 to 1906. Most well known is the Dawes Rolls. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/rolls.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_Degree_of_Indian_Blood Now I find your family in the 1930 census living in Leake County MS and parents Howard and Mary Lou as well as rest of family has race column written in as "neg" (Black). All born in MS including H and M's parents. The 1930 census did list Native American as "In" in race column if that was claimed. Then the family in in Scott County MS. I see a tree online that has Howard's parents as Ben Sharp and Ann/Anna Hone They married Nov 24, 1884 in Scott Co MS Ben's parents Alfred Sharp and Charlotte and family is living in Yazoo Co MS in 1880 and 1870 census. (Ben is listed as Ben, not Benjamin in any census a saw) The family name is transcribed as "Shark" in 1900 Beat 5, Scott County MS census. The LDS FamilySearch Pilot Record search has census and other records for free: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home All census info has Sharp family listed as Black, no mulatto or NA. Look at Hone family line and those of each generation back to 1700's. I found I have NA ancestors back before Revolutionary war.
