Hogweed
Question: How much has giant hogweed been in the news where you live? It made the news here about a week and a half ago and barely a day goes by without us learning more about the spread of giant hogweed. I was just curious as to what kind of news coverage this noxious weed was garnering in your neck of the woods
Answer: Last week we saw a good deal of coverage about this poisonous weed. I had never heard of it before the news reports. We live in cottage country central Ontario, Canada and have woods all about. Thanks to the news cast I will be giving this giant of a weed a wide berth.
For the benefit of those that don't know what it is I have posted a link to some information.
Question: Do you know anybody who died after coming into contact with Giant Hogweed? Me and a mate were chatting about this yesterday. At primary school, we were warned that coming into contact with Giant Hogweed would ultimately result in death!!!
Answer: We were told that too!! lol
Although not directly lethal, indirectly i suppose it could be.
My sister is a burns specialist nurse at a childrens hospital and they still see kids coming in with burns from Giant Hogweed!
Question: How do you get Giant Hogweed out of your yard without using a dangerous pesticide?
Answer: I've included a couple links with info; you can try continual chopping it back, but be very careful as the plant's sap may be more dangerous to you than a pesticide.
Question: Was the giant hogweed introduced accidentally or intentionally to Ontario? And how did they get to Ontario.
I'm doing a project for science class.
Answer: intentionally ~it was thought of as a "focus plant " by some gardeners ~because of it's height~
introduced in a lot of European Countries also.
.Heracleum mantegazzianum

Question: How do you safely eat the edible weed purslane aka Verdolaga, Pigweed, Little Hogweed or Pusley? apparently it is safe to eat raw but what parts are safe? is it the whole plant including the roots or just the leaves?
Answer: Typically you would only eat the leaves.
To prepare purslane (portulaca oleracea) safely, first wash it well, then prepare it any way you want. It's a very healthy green, rich in omega-3.
You can eat it raw, as a salad green or cook it in soups, stir-fries, or any other recipe you dream up.
Question: From where could i buy Hogweed tea or powder?
Thank you for your answer.
Answer: You can purchase hogweed at http://www.herbalremedies.com/ and you can buy various herbal teas at http://www.imperialteagarden.com/. Unfortunately I am unaware of anyplace online where you can buy pre-blended hogweed tea. Try eBay, perhaps?

Answer: Where I live, hogweed is considered an invasive pest. I don't suggest you encourage it any.
Question: Has anyone's dog been affected by giant hogweed? My dog has small (about 4mm) white spots on his face? My dog has small (about 4mm) white spots on his face that scab and then leave white spots again. I have recently noticed giant hogweed around the area I walk him and wonder if this could be the cause. I mentioned it to the vet but she said he would learn to avoid it and didn't think it was the cause.
Answer: Hogweed causes blisters that are almost like burns. You might try some mild steroid creme to help ease the pain. Benadryl might also help in a small dose. It can take months to heal up depending on how allergic the dog is to the plant. Fortunately dog fur helps to protect them more than mere skin would. People are working to try to eradicate the plant, but it is probably a loosing battle. If you see any of it in your area, you might try cutting the plant out. And try to keep your dog away from it. Humans with severe reactions sometimes require hospitalization from contact with the plant. Are these watery blister that resemble burned skin boils?
Question: Heard of a giant-Hogweed? It is toxic and invasive. it is in NYS, and Ct. Has anyone a photo of it?
Answer: http://www.hort.uconn.edu/cipwg/giant_ho…
It's starting to show up here in my county, it was on the news to report it to the DEC and local coopertive extension. I called both to report it growing on a local trout stream and never got a response about it, so there it grows.
It's big, shockingly big. The one clump I saw was almost 12 feet high.
Question: What are the dangers of giant hogweed.?
Answer: Giant Hogweed is a phototoxic plant.
Its sap can cause photodermatitis ie severe skin inflammations when the skin is exposed to sunlight or to UV-rays. Initially the skin colours red and starts itching. Then blisters form as in burns within 48 hours. They form black or purplish scars, which can last several years. Hospitalisation may become necessary.
Presence of minute amounts of sap in the eyes, can lead to temporary or even permanent blindness. These reactions are caused by the presence of linear derivatives of furocoumarin in its leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds. These chemicals can get into the nucleus of the epithelial cells, forming a bond with the DNA, causing the cells to die
Question: Giant Hogweed? Is giant hogweed still toxic when its dormant?
I'm in S. Ont, Canada
Answer: yes, however not as much

Question: Gardening-giant hogweed? I was strimming Giant Hogweed this morning and after about half an hour I started to find it difficult to breath. I have bad hayfever but I have never had bad breathing because of it. Icaighed so much I was sick several times. Did I breath in airborne sap from the hogweed or was it an extreme hayfever reaction?
Answer: Be very careful with this plant it can cause blisters on the skin that are just as bad as 2nd degree burns.Have a bath and stay away from it.
Question: does anyone know how to treat hogweed burns ????
Answer: Depending on how severe it is, you should consult a physician. It can leave permanent scarring.
You should wash it (before blisters break out) and keep it from being exposed to sunlight for up to 2 weeks.
Cold compresses are recommended.
Here's a site that talks about it, somewhat. Mostly the 2nd half of page 1, continued on page 3.
Question: Giant Hogweed Cultivation? I would like a row of giant hogweeds at the bottom of my garden, are they easy to grow from seeds which I can collect from some dead specimens at the local river?
When to plant and what precautions to take.
Answer: Hi Deighton
You will be so sorry!!
The roots are like tree trunks. The seeds spread over your garden and will choke out any other plants.
You will have a constant battle on your hands.
Best wishes.
Question: Advice please on creating a new raised lawn over wetland with Giant Hogweed? I am buying a house that I will demolish & replace with a new one. In the garden, the existing lawn descends gently down to a nice stream/river. But, between the upper parts of the lawn and the stream is an area of 1,500 square meters that consists of soft wet ground. This entire area is covered with Giant Hogweed and some clumps of tall trees.
This area could look lovely if I could raise & clear the ground and extend the lawn from the house down to the stream.
This is what I am thinking about doing, but would be grateful for any comments or easier/cheaper suggestions...
1) Cut the stalks of the largest Hogweeds and lay flat. ( I am fully aware about how dangerous this stuff is).
2) Lay 1,500 sqm of weed fabric over the entire area to keep out the Hogweed and restrict the rubble fill from sinking into the mud..
3) Demolish the house and use the brick rubble to raise the lawn by about 40cm and incorporate a French Drain system to the stream.
4) Lay another layer of weed fabric over the brick rubble.
5) Lay down 30cm of top soil
6) Seed for the lawn.
Am I going over the top here? I need to create a drain'able surface but do I need so much fabric? I don't want to give the Hogweed a chance to come up. Will the top soil remain in place over the weed fabric or could it wash away?
Thanks, Guy.
New Forest, Hampshire, UK
Answer: Check with your planning office before you start this project. This would not be allowed in the US under wetland environmental protection laws. Even if it was, this method will give you a crummy lawn. Improve the drainage, create a good deep topsoil, and get a good thick lawn established ASAP -- this would be an instance to consider using sod instead of seed. If the lawn is thick, weed seed resident in the soil will not germinate. Don't use barrier cloths... it will keep the lawn grasses from rooting deeply.
You may wish to consider solarizing the native soil for a season to reduce the seed load.

Question: I am looking to identify this large leafy plant.? I came across this plant near an area with a stream and waterfalls. Originally thought it may be hogweed.. but with a little more research think it is most likely NOT that.
It grows very tall has thick leathery leaves, the flowers only grow on the top of the plant, in a fairly large cluster.
