Eicosapentaenoic Acid

Question: what is eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and what is the function of this acid? How to get this acid?Is it from the foods we eat?

Answer: EPA is classified as an omega-3 fatty acid. There are several omega-3 fatty acids besides EPA: these include α-linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to be good for reducing inflammation. Uncontrolled inflammation is bad for your health, and is responsible for some autoimmune diseases such as lupus, asthma, and arthritis. It may even be responsible for cardiovascular problems, such as atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. Some studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may be good for your circulatory system and your brain. Since the body can't make omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids from other molecules, these are considered "essential fatty acids" which you must get directly from foods. You can get EPA and DHA from fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines. ALA can be obtained from plant products, such as flaxseed oil. It's currently under debate which omega-3 fatty acids are best, or what ratio is best. For instance, ALA may need to be converted by the body to EPA and DHA before it's beneficial. One person suggests that DHA may be more beneficial that EPA: http://www.benbest.com/health/dha.html Hopefully, more research will clear up the matter. Anyways, if you decide to start using supplements, you should check with your doctor first. EPA, DHA, and fish oil may reduce the blood's ability to clot, and could increase the risk of bleeding in certain people, particularly those taking warfarin (Coumadin).
