Datura
Question: What's the difference between Datura and Brugmansia? I've grown Datura metel and Datura inoxia. But the description for Brugmansia sounds like the same plant. Anyone know?
Answer: At one time Brugmansia plants were included in the genus Datura, but taxonomists have divided the two groups into different genera. Brugmansias are a long-lived, woody perennial, eventually reaching heights of over 20 feet in frost-free areas. They have downward to slightly outward-facing, large (6" to 24" long) trumpet-shaped blooms, in shades of white, cream, yellow, peach, orange, pink, and red and rarely set seed. In contrast, Daturas are a short-lived herbaceous perennial (they rarely live more than 3-4 years even in frost-free areas), are usually grown as an annual, and rarely exceed heights over 6 feet. Their smaller (2" to 8" long) white, cream, yellow, lavender or purple flowers are held upright above the plants and set seed freely.
Datura fruiits are prickly but Brugmansia fruits are not.
Question: Whats the difference between the effects from Henbane and Datura? Whats the difference between a Henbane high and a Datura high? I know both are very dangerous. I just wanted to know what the difference is in the effects between henbane and datura?
Answer: There about the same realy although henbane is feared a lil less b/c beer was brewed from it at one time. Not a fun herb.
Question: Whats the difference between the effects of Datura and Henbane? I know both of them are very dangerous so dont just answer this by saying "dont do it". I want the FACTS!! What are the effects of datura compared to henbane? Whats the difference between the two?
Answer: Henbane, like Datura, is noted for its tropane alkaloids , including hyoscyamine, hyoscine (scopolamine), and atropine. Atropine is derived from the racemization of hyocyamine, a process that occurs upon drying.
The difference between them is the amount of tropane alkaloids found in each, and the ratio of hyoscyamine to hyoscine.
Henbane is generally considered to be the weaker because it has slightly less of the alkaloids. Henbane also contains an almost equal ratio of hyoscine to hyoscyamine, whereas Datura contains a ratio of 1:2 for hyoscine and hyoscyamine, respectively.
Henbane
The effects are varied but in general cause hallucinations, drowsiness, stupefaction and disorientation. In sufficient doses the plant can be very dangerous causing unconsciousness, mania, violence, seizures, trembling of limbs and in extreme cases death.
Datura
The plant's effects are mainly stupefying. That is, they make the user feel drowsy, drunk-like and detached from things around them. They can also bring on hallucinations The doses are difficult to judge and can easily cause unconsciousness and death.
Take your pick.
Question: Whats the DIFFERENCE between the effects from Henbane and Datura? Whats the difference between a Henbane high and a Datura high? I know both are very dangerous. I just wanted to know what the difference is in the effects between henbane and datura and the facts?
Answer: Well one is a poison and the other a group of plants. You are comparing Henbane (Hyoscyamus Niger, or stinking nightshade) with a group of flowing plants of the family Solanaceae. As such the Datura flowers (as in moon flowers) are hallucinogenic is small amounts and deadly in moderate amounts.
If you have to ask about them here you most certainly do not need to be playing around with them. Both are deadly in small amounts. One flower may be enough to kill you as the concentration of them varies greatly from plant to plant and flower to flower.
And this is a forum about beer and wine, not how to get high off poisons plants.
Question: Can you stop nerve gas poisoning from eating a datura plant? From what I hear atropine is the antidote to poisoning through nerve agents. Datura is a common plant in that grows in north america that contains naturally occuring atropine but is normally toxic to ingest. However if atropine is not immediatly availible could you just pick a datura growing on the sidewalk and stop the nerve agent poisoning by eating it?
Im only saying its use as a last resort when immediate medical help is not availible. Atropine needs to be administered in less then a minute after nerve agent exposure. Although datura is toxic, its symptoms are reletivly easier to treat then nerve gas exposure. However im not saying its a good idea im just saying would it work as a last resort measure.
Also this is only a hypothetical situation im not saying it is likly that nerve gas exposure would happen
Answer: Do you think it likely that you will be in a nerve gas accident somewhere on a North American sidewalk?
Personally, I wouldn't try it.
Burrows and Tyrl (Toxic Plants of North America) list the toxicity at 0.1% b.w. from ingestion. And in any case, what is the dosage of atropine needed (I confess I know nothing of this supposed use as an antidote)? They say that "atropine or hyoscamine effects" tend to be "peripheral" for physiological reasons- the anhydride of atropine causes more problems (neurotoxic potential). The tropane alkaloids and a few other chemicals cause inherently unwanted symptoms.
Datura is toxic in a really big way. Just eating some of the plant will make you very ill at best. The possibility of atropine as an antidote would probably occur under very controlled conditions. ...What I'm saying is that it would probably be a bad idea.
Question: Which kind of datura has the most alkaloids? Yes i know drugs are bad and i know they kill.
But i used belladonna and datura for long time i know how to control myself.
Thank you!
Answer: I think they are l pretty similar. Datura ceratocaula Ort., otherwise known as Torna Loco or a kind of Toloache however seems to be the most dangerous- and perhaps thereby the strongest.
Question: What do I do with Datura seed pods that are still green? I bought some Datura pods (she said they were moonflowers, they're not, they're moon lillies) last weekend. They are still green and I'm not quite sure what to do with them. How do I store them until Spring? Can I start them early? I live in Kansas so we won't hit frost until November or so. Any help gardeners?
Answer: I'd say let them dry out until they split and open by themselves. Take the seeds out (they are actually quite like the seeds of their relative the bell pepper) and store them in a dry place until Spring.
Remember that the seeds are poisonous, so don't leave them where a pet (or child) might find and eat them!
Question: Can you make datura in to tabs? Hey i was think of letting some datura rot in a plastic beg then getting the joice from the rotting datura and making tabs from it is this even possable? O_O thanks i am sick of eating it its to strong that way!
Answer: You're an idiot. You'll have 3 brain cells left someday, so why waste the little you have left asking stupid questions that don't belong here?
Question: Datura plant I want to make a tea? What is the safest way to make datura, I know it has bad symptons but im sure theres a way like how much for doses and how exactly do you make it?
Answer: Datura oh yes..also known as jimson weed In Central Texas Where I was Raised..There is no way to regulate this weed from one plant to the next as far as strength..One plant can bring a good high and the one right next to it death... I had a few friends that used to do jimson weed quite often..for about 3 months untill one went into a comma and stayed there for near a year...The jimson weed came out of the same batch close to the Lampasas River...It is a very strong plant and the strength is uncontrollable...I would stay away from it..You want just hurt yourself with it..think of my friends family that stayed in pain for almost a year over a son they did not know if he would live or not, or even come out of the comma...
Question: How can I Datura Inoxia Datura inoxia (angel's-trumpet) as a legal high? Datura inoxia (angel's-trumpet, thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian-apple, moonflower, sacred datura, toloatzin, or toloache) is a legal high, but not prepared well can be lethal. How can i prepare it for use?
Answer: I have you ask why you want to know this, I can tell you, but if its for killing off a partner I ain't telling.
additional. If you're thinking of killing yourself, don't, a college friend of mine thought the world was over when her partner dumped her, she tried something else, and thankfully is still alive. Don't look for extreme measures, hey if your single get out there and socialise, failing that contact me, I've had enough death and dispondancy for a lifetime. lburman996@ bt internet.com. (uk address at present as I'm moving to Giro in Japan next week) I'm new at these q@s but would welcome comments.
Question: Where can i buy Datura Flowers/ Angels trumpet Flowers in the uk? Hi, every one! I'm getting married in september. As part of the flower arangments we want some Angels trumpet flowers. Dont know where we can get them. they can be found in europe but are classed as a troppical flower.
Answer: some species can be raised from seed, (try Chiltern seeds or Ebay as sources) but if you are marrying in September then that's not enough time, so you need to buy plants ready grown. Most big garden centres stock Datura and Brugmansia (looks a lot like Datura); try Dobbies if there's one near you, or just B&Q or Homebase. Ebay might also be worth trying.
Bear in mind that Datura is one of the most toxic plants on the planet: i'm sure nobody is going to eat them but getting the sap on your skin (as when holding a bouquet) can allow the toxins to enter your system. Also, if you get the sap on your fingers then rub your eyes you may end up with pupils that are dilated for 3-5 DAYS! (this is due to the large amounts of hyoscine and atropine in datura).
Question: How fast will my Datura grow? It's an Angel's Trumpet. Right now it is about a cm and its been sprouted for two days. It is under optimal conditions. It took 2 weeks for germination.
Some type of time line would be preferable but not necessary
And yes, I know all about the dangers of Datura's and I DO NOT PLAN ON USING IT RECREATIONALLY! Not to be rude, but please don't give me a lesson on something that I've spent HOURS researching.
Thanks!
Answer: Is it Datura or Brugmansia. Brugmansia or Angel's Trumpet grows FAST. It can get 8' tall in one season. It has a woody trunk and the flowers hang down.
Datura which has an upright flower rather than one that hangs down like the angel's trumpet, and grows more slowly and gets bushier.
Question: When should I bring my Brugmansia/Datura and Bougainvillea plants indoors for the winter? As its starting to get a bit colder here at night (UK) I am sure it is almost time to bring them indoors.
Answer: neither one like temps under 50F.... so get them in early... a surprise chiller could do them harm.....do the opposite of 'hardening off'.... take them in a little at a time.... remember they're going from warm outdoor temps to cooler air conditioning.....so don't shock them!!
Question: What is the common name for Datura Inoxia flower? This is a large, white, night blooming flower in the form of an annual shrub, not to be confused with a vine of the morning glory family which is called moonflower. The blooms do not hang down like angel's trumpet.
Answer: Datura inoxia (angel's-trumpet, thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian-apple, moonflower, sacred datura, toloatzin, or toloache) is a species in the family Solanaceae. It is native to the Americas, and introduced in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The scientific name is often cited as D. innoxia.
Question: I would like to know how to grow a Datura Stramonium plant.? I have recently purchased Datura Stramonium seeds from Bouncingbearbotanicals, and I would like to know the best way to grow the plant.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Answer: Seed germination, sowing instructions for Jimson weed. Datura stramonium is easy to grow from seeds. Sow early spring indoors. Pot up the seedlings into individual pots as soon as the first true leaf appears and plant them out after the last expected frosts.
Question: I have what I think is a Datura. Its never seen daylight since I bought it. How to overwinter? The label says Datura, and it bloomed inside my apartment a few times over the summer (white upright bells that withther the following day, the blossom is scented like ivory soap).
Just to confound things I pinched some Baptista (I think) seeds from a local nursery, which have just started to sprout (one for sure, maybe two).
Nothing would make me prouder than to father a Baptista plant.
So I'm willing to chop the Datura, if that would help.
Do you think I can keep both going over winter in the same pot?
Am I a fool to think a seedling of Baptista will make it to spring time with out grow lights?
One more additional complication about my lighting situation. It's a south facing window, but it has plastic opaque sheet on it (bought from Ikea) so I can enjoy the sunlight, but maintain some privacy. So far in my extermely limited experience of growing apartment plants (a few months with the Datura) nothing has died.
Suggestions, comments, rude noises? All are accepted here
Answer: The datura you describe sounds like a Brugmansia[Angle Trumpet], the datura I grow has dark medium size leaves, the bloom is burgandy on the outside of the bloom and white inside, and smells like peanut butter, the scent you talk about is that of a brugmansia. The two plants use to be in the same genus, but the powers that be decided to give the datura it's own idenity. Here in Georgia we keep the brugmansias in the ground over the winter, and my landlord cut ours back and stores the branches in a five gallon bucket it alittle water and they root over the winter and he sets them out in the spring, at the nursery I grow for we just cut the branches and stick the in a one gallon pot and grow the in the greenhouse over the winter, spring ans summer, they root within a week. As for the datura's we collect the seed and grow the plants in a mist house. The main reason I think you have a Brugmansia, instead of a Dutura is, the flower from a brugmansia fades in a day, a dutura bloom stays and goes to seed, the seed looks like a small golfball, when you open it, you have about fifty seeds inside. Either way they are tropical plants and need humidity and water, cut back on the water in the winter set up the humidity in the winter if you run heat. I hope i have'nt confused you!! As for you Baptisia, we grow it at another facility, so I have'nt had the growing experience of the plant, the common name is false indigo,[the one we grow] Baptisia Australis is blue, blooms may-june , 3-4' high, when planting space 18-24" apart. Good luck and keep your plants warm, humid, and in a suuny location. Always be on the look out for insects and fungus. Happy Planting!
Question: Where can I buy small Datura plants?
No I just like the way they look and wouldn't even imagine eating them
Answer: These are ususally sold in 1 gallon pots in the nurseries because they get so big. Unless you have a wholesale license and can get plugs, you most likely won't find them in a smaller size. You can contact a good nursery in your area and see if they can special order some for you in a smaller size. That's one option. Another option is to join GardenWeb and you can trade for seeds and/or plants with people there. During various times of the year, there are several varieties offered up for trade. (Some traders will also do a SASE - self addressed stamped envelope too if you don't have anything to trade, just ask.)
http://www.gardenweb.com/
You create a profile and on that profile you can list plants/seeds you have to trade and plants/seeds you are looking for. Check out the trading forums and you will see up to date listings of what people are offering. Watch out though - it's ADDICTING!
If you have a wholesale license, do an internet search for "Datura" and see what wholesale nurseries come up. From there, email them and see if they have plugs or can refer you to a nursery that does.
Hope this helps some. Best of luck. :)
Question: Can sitting next to a brugmansia datura send me crazy? Everytime I sit next to this plant in my conservatory, after about 30 mins I am sure I can feel some effect that it has on me.
Answer: Very possible. In a warm humid environment the Datura, which contains psychoactive chemicals could affect the more sensitive person, especially after handling leaves or flowers. There are some very nasty side effects to the `misuse`of this plant, and it has claimed the lives of some `misusers`.
Question: How to take Datura (angels trumpet) i have growing outside and want to get high.? i dont care if dangerous im already drugfukked
Answer: It is a plant named Datura sp. of Solanaceae.
Datura has long been used as a poison and hallucinogen. The dose-response curve for the combination of alkaloids is very steep, so people who consume datura can easily take a potentially fatal overdose.
It is dangerous so,please don't take it!
Question: Has anyone ever smoked datura? I read the effects are milder and more tolerable if you smoke it? And please dont copy and paste from erowid.org. I have already read most of everything there about datura and brugmansia. Yup.
Also, if you have how long did the effects last?
Answer: do you mean Jimson Weed? if so, a friend of mine once did it & i didn't hear from him for 3 days. then, i got a call from him & he was freaking out, saying, "don't ever let me do this again!". and this was coming from a emergency room nurse who knew his way around drugs.
needless to say, i never tried it. it grows out here in the wild everywhere. every once in a while, we hear of some horse that eats it & dies.
in Carlos Castanedas' books, he is told by the "brujo" Don that of all the guides to the other worlds, datura is the least trustworthy. she is capable of giving great power, but inevitably, she gains control over the user & leaves him a wreck. "humito" is the friendliest guide to the "crack between worlds" and past the Guardian, if that's where you're going.
