Camphor Tree
Question: camphor tree? If i burn a camphor tree, is it harmful to the environment or to others if they inhale the fumes?
Answer: No. That's a misconception because burning camphor oil is harmful. Only because most camphor oil is man-made. That's the bad stuff.
Question: My neighbors have a camphor tree. I like the way it looks. Are there any problems? What can you tell me about the camphor tree? Thank you.
Answer: CINNAMOMUM camphora. camphor tree.
my favorite tree for climbing. i have had several in different locations. in it's proper place and planted properly it can be a wonderful addition to any out area. need good drainage, can be messy and no friend to nearby walkways, it has more good points then bad.
not for use in close to garden or house, wonderful to look at (and to climb) follow simple placement directions and you won't have a problem. don't clean up under it. it will make it's own mulch and control thr weeds for you. very fast grower! one day small, the next you'd think it went poof! like by magic it's big.. did i mention it was good for climbing? if you have the room, go for it.
Great for a hammock. good for climbing too. a rope swing fits nice under it. wonderful tree if you like to climb.
Question: Is it possible to propagate a camphor tree from its suckers? If so, how?
I was cutting off the suckers from my tree and one of them is so large (about a foot tall and an inch thick at the base) and beautiful that I would like to grow it as a separate tree if this is possible.
Thanks for your help!
Answer: You can only do this if you happen to find a sucker around the base of the tree and are able to get a sufficient amount of roots rather than cutting the suckers off at ground level. The ones you cut from the trunk or lower branches will not be possible if this is what you are referring to. And, I have never seen a Camphor tree send up suckers from its root system, so you may be out of luck...

Question: What would make a camphor tree have so many suckers(second growth) that clump up like mistletoe? Every limb that has these sucker clumps has died back on the ends.It is doing the same thing as if it had clumps of mistletoe.The tree next to it has just the normal sucker growth on it and looks fine.
Answer: Are these grafted trees? If the tree has a swelled area at ground level it is likely grafted. If so, the swelled areal must be above ground level. it it isn't the root used for the graft is putting up shoots from the native root and not from the camphor tree.
Question: How heavily can I prune a 52yr old Camphor tree. The branches are too near my neighbors yard.? Can major branches be removed without a problem for the tree?
Answer: I moved to northern cal in 1999 where my new husband had a 40 year old camphor tree. It was (and is) very big. I had professional tree pruners take out perhaps one third of the lower growth in order to keep the shade but cut down on the mess. The tree had no adverse reaction at all and is still thriving.
Interestingly, a neighbor who had a similar tree, probably also started in the 60's cut off the major limbs back to less than six feet from the main trunk and the tree put out new branches in less than six months which produced a very full, compact tree.
I think I would be surprised if the tree couldn't survive anything you could do to it.
Question: Camphor Tree Leaves Curling Up? I have 6 camphor trees that I planted last year on a slope in my backyard. They seems to be doing ok except for one thing. The new leaves that sprouted in the early spring have all curled up. Is this normal for a camphor tree? I think I am giving them enough water but is it not enough or too much? Or perhaps they need some sort of food. Please help! Thanks!
Answer: Newly transplanted tree can stay in transplant shock for a few years, depending on the size of the tree. The smaller the tree, the faster it acclimates, and develops an adequate root system.
Because you planted them on a slop, you may be getting more run off of your water than absorption.Add an undeveloped root system,and your going to have drought stress problems.
I suggest applying strait potassium to help build the root system.( Potassium is the last number in the fertilizer.(0-0-22,0-0-51 etc..)) In about 2 weeks apply a good fertilizer( like a 16-4-8 or something close to that, and preferably slow release)
Water the trees from the top of the slop, down.Same with the fertilizer.
Camphor's are fast growers, and because of this they are prone to diseases, and mites love them. Look under the leaves for little white, grains of sand,(These are mite egg sacks),webbing, or the mite itself. Mites are the size of a pin head, and you can see them if you have really good eyes.
They will have blight, and canker sudden die back,and there isn't any thing you can do to stop, or prevent this. Just remove the branches when they do die back.
I like the way Camphor's look, and they make a great shade tree, but not the tree I would choose for my land scape.
Question: Should you prune a camphor tree? If so, how often and how short should you prune it? I live in central California, where the summers are hot and the winters are wet and mild
Answer: MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE
Pruning a Camphor tree is a matter of taste. I have one I prune several times a year because i am training it for a certain size and uses in that area. I have two others that only need a little shaping or to remove dead wood.
use caution when pruning more then one. always clean saw blades and clippers with bleach before trimming the next tree. subject to verticillium wilt, the problem is often carried from one tree to another via pruning tools.
Question: i love the way a camphor tree looks. any draw back before i plant some? i know all about them & the good points, I only want to know the bad.

Question: Camphor Tree Info Please. Should I prune it, if so when and how? Just bought a house with several beautiful Camphor trees. I have no idea how to care for them. Please advise? Thanks.
Answer: MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE!
Pruning a Camphor tree is all matter of taste. I have one that I prune several times a year because I am training it for a certain size and use in that area area of my yard.
I have two others that only need a little shaping once a year... mostly just to remove or dead wood.
Use caution when pruning more then one. Always clean saw blades and clippers with bleach before trimming the next tree. The Camphor tree is subject to Verticillium Wilt. The problem is often carried from one tree to another via pruning tools.
The Camphor is a great climbing tree for youngsters as most lower limbs are easy to reach and easy to move about on without the fear of climbing to high.
It is also a wonderful tree for a swing or hammock.
Question: Is wood from a camphor tree safe to cook on?
Answer: I wouldn't, it's poisonious
Question: Cutting Camphor Tree Roots? I have a Camphor tree in a house I'm purchasing that was planted right next to a brick wall running along the rear property line. It's about 20 years old, and the stump is only about 4" from the wall.
I've been hoping I could salvage the tree by just cutting and tarring any roots that are damaging the wall, and repairing it, but I'm worried that I'll just be asking for more damage in a short while.
Is there any possibility of cutting back the offending roots, or should I just go ahead, spend the money, and cut/grind the tree entirely?
Answer: Get the entire tree removed. Its just in the wrong place unfortunately and you could remove some roots and then others would cause problems.
The other problem with Camphor trees that plants find it nearly impossible to grow under them, so if you were hoping to have a nice garden you will have to remove it anyway.
It's a shame they didn't put in something more practical away from the house. Its always sad to see a large tree removed.
Question: Tree cutters spread mulch from a fresh cut camphor tree. Is that OK?
Answer: After the big hurricane came through I had many stumps ground out and used the mulch on most of my landscape. I see no reason the camphor mulch would not work, you may want to compost it a bit before putting it out.
Question: i am taking a homeopathic remedy and i was told to stay away from antidotes like tea tree oil & camphor.? where can i find a list of antidotes to look out for? i am taking zincum metallicum 200c.
Answer: Maybe look on a website like the Natural Standard (www.naturalstandard.com)
They have a list of homeopathic/herbal/alternative med products.
Best of luck!
Question: I planted a camphor tree 2 wks ago. The leaves now have some brown and black spots. What do I do? Thank you.?
Answer: transplant shock? check for a firm planting and/or spray fungicide
Question: Can someone give me a sentence for Camphor xD? Camphor definition: a white fragment solid that comes from the wood and bark of a tall Asian tree (camphor tree) and its used mostly in medicine and in making plastics.

Answer: nope, not a chance!
Ask me another.
Question: How can I tell if my camphor furniture is non-toxic? When I brought a secretary desk made from camphor (unknown as to what kind) into my home, I developed a sinus infection. That was months ago, and I still get sniffly when I'm around the desk. I had read online that wood from certain "camphor" trees is toxic and can cause health problems simply by touching the wood. So, is the wood of my desk dangerous to me and my husband, or am I reacting only to the varnish (which I can replace more cheaply)?
Answer: go get a lab to take an example and examine it
Question: Calculate the molality, mole fraction, and weight percentage of camphor in this solution.? Camphor, a white solid with a pleasant odor, is extracted from the roots, branches, and trunk of the camphor tree. Assume you dissolve 70.0 g of camphor (C10H16O) in 675 mL of ethanol, C2H5OH.
(The density of ethanol is 0.785 g/mL.)
Answer: I'll tell you how to do it, you plug in numbers.
Molality=moles/mass of solvent in KG
n=70g/MM of camphor
mass of Ethanol---> density=mass/volume
mass in g=d*V=.785g/mL*675mL
so then you divide, make sure you change mass to KG not g.
Molality=n/m
the mole fraction would be found by finding number of moles of ethanol, add it with the number of moles of camphor, then divide camphor by the total.
Weight perentage would be the number obtained from dividing mass of camphor (70) by the total of camphor and mass of ethanol, make sure all of em are in the same unit, as in all grams or all Kg.
n thats that :)
Question: Can I burn camphor wood? Can i burn logs which are cut from a camphor tree.

Question: What is the molality of camphor in the solution.? Camphor is a natural compound from a tree found in Java, Brazil, China, and other countries. A solution of camphor in ethanol is a mild topical antiseptic. One such solution contains 1.60 g camphor dissolved in 137 mL of ethanol (ρ = 0.785 g/mL). What is:
1.molality of camphor in the solution.
______m
2.mole fraction of camphor in the solution
3.mass percent of camphor in the solution.
______percent
Answer: Camphor, C10H16O, MW=152.23 g/mol
Ethanol, C2H6O, MW=46.068 g/mol
1. Molality of camphor in the solution is 0.0977 mol/kg.
Solution:
moles camphor = 1.60g / 152.23 g/mol
moles camphor = 0.0105 mol
wt of ethanol in kg = (137mL * 0.785 g/mL) / 1000 g/kg
wt of ethanol in kg = 0.1075 kg
molality = 0.0105 mol / 0.1075 kg
molality = 0.0977 mol/kg
2. Mole fraction of camphor in the solution is 0.00449.
Solution:
moles camphor = 0.0105 mol
moles ethanol = 107.5g / 46.068g/mol
moles ethanol = 2.33 mol
total number of moles in the solution = 0.0105 mol + 2.33 mol
total number of moles in the solution = 2.3405 mol
mole fraction of camphor = 0.0105 mol / 2.3405
mole fraction of camphor = 0.00449
3. mass percent of camphor in the solution is 1.47%.
Solution:
wt of camphor = 1.60g
wt of ethanol = 107.5g
total wt = 1.60 + 107.5g
total wt = 109.1
mass percent of camphor = (1.60 * 100) / 109.1
mass percent of camphor = 1.47%
