Question: Does Bitter Gourd have medicinal properties? I am given to understand that bitter gourd in raw juice form is good for people with onset of diabetes. If so, what is the correct way of making this juice extract. Should it be made from the raw vegetable or after boiling it? Also what is the suggested dosage quantity, whether it should be taken at any specific time of the day and the number of days to take this extract.
Answer: Yep! The scientific name is Momordica charantia and it has a multitude of effects on glucose uptake (both intestinal absorption and muscle cell uptake), etc. Overall, it will decrease blood glucose levels and increase insulin sensitivity. It's a pretty potent herb, so use it with caution. There's no known toxicity associated with bitter melon, but it can absolutely cause hypoglycemia.
***If you're already taking meds for DM, be aware that this herb will definitely potentiate the meds (increase their effects.)***
Dosage is 10 - 60 ml of expressed juice (raw vegetable) daily. And it shouldn't be used for more than 4-6 weeks at a time without evaluation/guidance.
Question: Is it good to Drink bitter gourd juice Daily? Are there any adverse side effects of consuming it daily? I drink a glass of bitter gourd juice everyday in empty stomach..
Answer: Why should you do that for? It can cause severe acidity and damage stomach and esophagus and the intestines.
If you think the bitter bitter gourd juice will ''neutralize'' the ''sweetness'' of the blood of a diabetic, you are wrong.
1.Bitter gourd juice does not enter into the blood stream directly.
2. Suppose your blood sugar level is 220mg/dL as against the normal of 120mg/dL. Your blood is '''sweeter''' by one gram of sugar in one liter of blood. The tissues are harmed by the excess sugar. But it does not show up as sweetness and the excess sugar is not removed by the bitterness of the juice.
I would advise you to do this. Have your fasting blood and post-prandial blood sugar levels checked. Was there a beneficial change, before and after, the bitter gourd juice treatment?
