Question: how to build an advanced atom model? I am doing a project and have to make an atom model of the atom Indium, atomic number 49. I've already built the atom, but I'm competing against other students so I need some ideas to make it really cool. The atom is made out of clay, the electrons surrounding the atom on toothpicks. Does anyone know anything I could add to that? Please make sure the instructions are detailed.
Answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_orbi…
Spheres and donuts of clay. It gets very complex as the atomic mass goes up. I would do one of the lighter elements.
Carbon, Oxygen, or Nitrogen
Question: Simple Atomic ratio question? The element indium has an atomic mass of 114.8 g and an atomic number of 49. Naturally occurring
indium contains a mixture of indium-112 and indium-115, respectively, in an atomic ratio of
approximately
(a) 6/94 (b) 25/75 (c) 50/50 (d) 75/25 (e) 94/6
I'd appreciate it if someone could show me how to do this.
Answer: We'll say there is x% of indium-112 is ocurring naturally.then(100-x)% of indium-115 is there.
114.8={112 * x%+ 115 * (100-x)%} / 100
when solve this equation you'll get 6.6. for X.
so (100-x)= 100- 6.6= 93.4
ratio=indium 112/ indium 115 = 6.6 / 93.4
approximately it is 6/94
answer is (a)
Question: An ion having a 4+ charge and a mass of 49.9 amu has 2 electrons with principal quantum number n = 1, 8 electr? An ion having a 4+ charge and a mass of 49.9 amu has 2 electrons with principal quantum number n = 1, 8 electrons with n = 2, and 10 electrons with n = 3. Supply as many of the properties for the ion as possible from the information given. (Hint: In forming ions, the 4s electrons are lost before the 3d electrons.)
(a) What is the atomic number?
(b) What is the total number of s electrons?
(c) What is the total number of p electrons?
(d) What is the total number of d electrons?
(e) What is the number of neutrons in the nucleus?
(f) What is the ground-state electron configuration of the neutral atom?
HEre's what I tried. For (a), I added up all of the electrons they give, and the sum is 20. If there is a 4+ charge, then there must be 24 protons, so is 24 the answer?
For (b), if there are 2 electrons with principal quantum number n = 1, then there's only 1 s orbital, but how about the number of electrons? There is also what I had trouble with (b), (c), (d), (e)... (f), I don't really understand what it's asking.
Answer: You have a) right. For b) c) d) make an electron orbital diagram the one that has 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p so ans so on. Put all the electrons given in the corresponding orbitals and then add the s electrons, p etc. there are 8 s electrons; 12 p electrons and no d electrons. I am not so sure about the p and d electrons because this is chromium. e) Since it amu is less than normal you take the original amu ignoring the weight of the electrons and subtract 51.996-49.9 amu then divide that by 1.0087 amu ( neutron) and you get 2 so only 22 neutrons.
f) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s1 3d5

Question: How do you find the atomic mass of an unstable isotope? I have this problem that i cannot figure out. Rubidium has a stable isotope with 48 neutrons and a mass number of 85. Rubidium also has an unstable isotope with 49 neutrons and a mass number of 86. The stable isotope has a relative abundance of 72.17% and an atomic mass of 84.9117 amu. What is the atomic mass of the unstable isotope?
could someone show me how to work this out...i tried two different ways to solve it, but i got two completely different answers, so i really don't know what to do now! Thanks!!!
Answer: You usually don't count unstable isotopes unless their half-life is extremely long. The mass numbers approximate the amu numbers since there is a certain binding strength reflected in the amu. Are you sure there aren't some other stable isotopes like 84 and 87?
Question: indium-112 and indium-115? Indium has atomic number 49 and atomic mass 114.8g. Naturally occurring indium contains a mixture of indium-112 and indium-115, respectively, what is the ratio of indium-112 to indium-115?
Answer: Let percentage of indium 112 be x and indium-115 be y
112x + 115y = 114.8
x+y = 1, so x = 1-y
Substituting into the first equation,
112(1-y) + 115y = 114.8
112 - 112 y + 115y = 114.8
y = 0.9333333
x = 0.0666666
Ratio of indium-112 to 115: 0.066666:0.9333333
= 1:14
Question: Determine the number of protons and neutrons in each of the following isotopes of chromium and use the followi? Determine the number of protons and neutrons in each of the following isotopes of chromium and use the following natural abundances and masses to calculate its atomic mass.
Cr-50 4.345% 49.9460 amu
Cr-52 83.79% 51.9405 amu
Cr-53 9.50% 52.9407 amu
Cr-54 2.365% 53.9389 amu
Answer: The number of protons of all isotopes equals the atomic number of chromium = 24. The number of neutrons is determined by subtracting the atomic number from the mass number:
Cr-50: 50 - 24 = 26 neutrons
Cr-52: 52 - 24 = 28 neutrons
Cr-53: 53 - 24 = 29 neutrons
Cr-54: 54 - 24 = 30 neutrons
The atomic mass of the element itself is given by the following formula:
{Sum of[(isotope mass)x(abundance/100%)]}
Thus, the mass of chromium is:
Atomic mass = (49.9460)(0.04345)+(51.9405)(0.8379)+(52…
Atomic mass = {2.170 + 43.52 + 5.029 + 1.276}/4
Atomic mass = 51.99 amu
Cheers.

13. How many neutrons are present in an atom of fluorine that has a mass number of 19 and an atomic number of 9?
A. 9 B. 10 C. 19 D. 28
Answer: Atomic number refers to the number of protons an atom of that element has. It's the number of protons which determine which element it is.
Atomic mass refers to where the mass of the atom comes from, in other words, the number of protons plus the number of neutrons (since electrons have negligible mass).
11 B. 49 protons so atomic number is 49; 49 p + 66 n = 115 for at. mass
12 A. 6 protons so at. no. is 6; 6 p + 6n = 12 for at. mass
13 B. Mass number is the same as atomic mass, so you're given that there are 9 protons and 19 (n+p), so there are 10 neutrons in this atom.
Question: Estimate the number of electrons capable of conducting an electrical charge in 470 cm^3 of silver. The density of silver is 10.49 x 10^6 g.m^-3 , and the atomic mass is 107.869 g.mol^-1. Only valence electrons are expected to conduct electrical charge.

what does a gamma ray represent? is it a particle? are there any changes in mass or atomic number when a nucleus produces only a gamma ray?
Answer: For the first part...
do you want the decay pathways for those isotopes? if so...which ones? Alpha, Beta, or Gamma?
I'll just give you the nuclear decay pathways for each one for each type.
Alpha Decay - 136 53 I ----> 132 51Sb+ 4 2 He
Beta Decay - 136 53 I----> 136 54 Xe+ 0 -1 e + v
Gamma Decay - 136 53 I* -----> 136 53 I + g
Alpha - 133 51 Sb -----> 129 49 In+ 4 2 He
Beta - 133 51 Sb ----> 133 52 Te+0 -1 e + v
Gamma - 133 51 Sb*-----> 133 51 Sb + g
Alpha - 117 49 In -----> 113 47 Ag+ 4 2 He
Beta - 117 49 In -----> 117 50 Sn+ 0 -1 e + v
Gamma - 117 49 In* -----> 117 49 In+ g
Idk if that's what your looking for but I gave it my best guess.
For the second part...a gamma ray is basically a gamma particle. It is the strongest particle emitted from any type of decay. It is from gamma decay. It has been found that the mass of the decaying particle on the left side of the equation is less than the mass of the other side with the decay products. That "lost mass" is basically mainly conversion into kinetic energy.
