Question: How can you make an arrow and arrowhead out of wood? I just need to know how big of a stick I need and what tools I need. I've always wondered how to do this. Thanks
Answer: First. you can definitely make the ARROW shaft from wood... I made hundreds back in my Boy Scout days. You need reasonably straight sticks: willow, oak, yew, pine...
Shave them clean with a knife or spoke-shave or plane... then get them straight with a spoke-shave and knife.
Arrow-heads.. nominally they are metal (or for ancient work: stone). You could make those as well.. research "Stone Arrow Head Technique". I've put simple barbs in my wood arrows for fishing within the laws on the California Fish & Game.

Question: I want to make a bow and arrow the old fashion way but with wood you buy in a store, any tips? it needs to be a long bow, that i can carve easily but can afford to get dropped now and then.
Answer: WOW, is there an index that you include in your message Steph? Lol. To the point literaly!
Question: I was wondering what a good draw wieght wood be for large game hunting with a bow and arrow? I want to either have recurve bow or a long bow. any suggetions would be a big help thatk you!
Answer: Although "large game" can -- and has been -- taken with bows of 30 lb draw-weight (or less, on occasion), many states have a minimum draw-weight requirement of AT LEAST 40 pounds. This isn't because of some idea that at least 40 pounds of draw-weight is needed, but because it ensures the bowhunter has enough bow to do the job; far too many people think they are ready to go bowhunting, when they really need more practice (they miss too often...).
The thought that a "heavy" bow of at least 60 lbs is needed is a bunch of hogwash. Use properly placed (this means ACCURATELY placed), properly made matched HUNTING arrows (matched to the bow/archer combination, and made for hunting; hunting arrows should be about 10 grains for every pound of draw, sometimes heavier - 400 grains for a 40 lb bow is a good starting point), with SHARP broadheads, and you won't have to worry about being "underbowed" -- as long as you pay attention to the local regulations where you hunt. So long as your bow is within the local regs, use whatever you are comfortable with.
The only reason I can think of to need a super-heavy bow (over 70 lb draw) or super-light arrow (less than 6 grains/lb draw) is for the over-60-yard shots -- yet the average bowhunting rage is between 20 and 35 yards. Humans have been killing "large game" animals with "molasses slow" Traditional and Primitive equipment for thousands of years, with a great amount of efficiency; it should be far more than obvious that a "super-fast" light-weight hunting arrow with a "flat" trajectory is not quite as important as certain manufacturers would wish us all to believe.
Question: how to make a wood arrow for a bow? i want to know how to make a archery arrow, i can get all the equipments i just need to know how to make it. i hate paying 20 bucks Just for a arrow, so im going to make my own.if you can answer this tell me how people space out the feather so evenly b/c at you tube i see people just guessing where the fetching goes.
please include a website or instruction. any help is appreciated
Answer: First the shaft, it's not just about straightness or weight, the shaft need to be spined properly. You see when you shoot an arrow out of a bow, the arrow bends, bend too much or too little and the arrow won't go the way you point it. If you need to make a mistake though, error on the stiff side. This part is rather hard if you don't have a spine tester. A spine tester is easy enough to make, what you need is a 2 pound weight, something to hang the weight on the shaft, and two blocks of wood. Here's what you do, place the blocks 26" apart, place the would be arrow shaft across the blocks. Hang the weight approximately in the middle of the shaft, and measure the deflection of the shaft to the hundredth of an inch if possible. For shaft material I've used hard wood dowels just for kicks. They don't last long but they work ok for light bows.
I don't know how heavy your bow is, but you can use Easton spine chart or any other manufacturer to guess what spine you should need. You'll need to know your draw length and the bow's draw weight at that draw length to determine the spine needed. A half inch deflection for example is good for use on a 40 pound bow with a 30" draw length. So now you have your shaft, next you need to taper both ends, to swage it as we call it. You can use a pencil sharpener or sander to taper the ends. You put the nock on one end and points on the other. The nock and point you'll be better off buying already made. They should cost about $1 per arrow.
Fletching is the last step. If you're using feathers, your best bet is to use a fletching jig, AAE makes a cheap one for about $20. I do know some people that can fletch just by sight. You'll need a fast drying glue, because the problem with feathers is that it has a natural curl. So if you have no jig, you'll have to hold on to that feather until the glue sets, normal fletching glue(fleth tite) takes about 20 minutes to dry. Spacing and straightness will come with training if you're not using a jig. With a jig it's all automatic. Once you're done gluing all the feathers, make sure to add a dab of glue to the leading and trailing ends of each feather. This final step will make a huge difference on how long your feathers will stay on the shaft. Good luck.
Question: whats the best wood to use for a homemade bow and arrow? Also, what about for arrows.
Answer: There are many, many woods suitable for making a bow. The top two on any bowyers list are going to yew and osage orange. Also suitable are hickory, pecan (many nut bearing trees work well like walnut) rock maple, elm, ash, oak (red mostly, but also white), ironwood(hop hornbeam), juniper, cherry and the list goes on and on. As for arrows, Port Orford cedar tops the list, but hardwoods like hickory, and ash are also used for stronger heavier arrows. Popple, birch, and most pines, while not suitable for quality bows, will often make excellent arrows if crafted properly. Rose shoots, reeds, cane shoots, and other similar vegetation are also wonderful arrow shaft material, and are a great choice for those trying to replicate the ancient art, as Native Americans (among others) often used these materials for arrow making. I suggest Reading The Traditional Bowyers Bible. It is stocked with information on how to make a homemade bow and string and accessories. The series gives many tips on making quality traditional archery gear with top notch performance.
Question: What is the best wood to make a bow and arrow from?
Answer: One of the best woods to make a bow out of is Osage Orange, but you can make a bow out of almost anything. My personal favourite is a bamboo-backed ipe bow.
You can also make arrows out of a variety of materials. The most common material is Port Orford Cedar. Probably the best material is Sitka spruce. People have also made arrows out of pine, ash, hickory, and a variety of other things. I've made arrows out of walnut and maple.
Question: Would it affect a wood bow and arrow if you wood burnt designs in it?
Answer: Yes it could make it weak in those spots and excessive drying and cracking of the wood.D
Question: What is the best wood to make a bow and arrow?
Answer: Yew would be the best but it's very hard to find. Ash is fairly common and would work just as well
Question: what wood should I use to make a bow and arrow? ive heard that Manuka trees are good for bows but if there's something better to use please tell me.(ty for any answers)
Answer: A yew stave cut with 1/2 its diam. being heartwood (inner face) & the outer 1/2 being sapwood is the classical ideal in northern Europe. However ash & elm also work OK in the same confirguration.
You'll need access to the immediatley cut tree and seasoning should take months - commercially seasoned timber tends to be unsuitable.
Question: Can a Shaolin Priest catch an arrow or a bullet in flight? Can they punch through rock and wood?
Answer: No one can catch arrows or bullets at firing speed. the human hand simply can't withstand the velocity.
A person could potentially punch through some rock or wood, be it thin enough.
Question: What is the best way to make a bow and arrow? What is the best way to make a bow and arrow out of wood with mainly just a knife.
(What kind of wood, how much it should bend, flat wood- | - , circular wood- 0 - exc.)
Answer: just find like a stick outside thats kinda flexxible with a little bend and put a string on it, i used to make them all the time
